Zubin Mehta's reputation is an (undeservedly) mixed one. Following an excellent term as director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Mehta's career was marked by a rocky period with the New York Philharmonic in which he was caricatured by the NY press as a showman with little substance to his music making. A series of lackluster recordings with that group did not help. This wonderful collection goes a long way to demonstrating how incorrect this assessment is. The six CD set highlights some of Mehta's best music-making in performances captured in wonderful sound by Decca. Appropriately enough, most of the recordings are with Los Angeles, where Mehta made his reputation.

Zubin Mehta’s tenure of over 16 years as the musical director of the ‘LA Phil’ marks an important chapter in the orchestra’s history. The recorded portrait of the musical partnership between the first American orchestra to be exclusively contracted by a British recording company and the dynamic maestro is explored here in this new edition.

Cellist Nathaniel Rosen began to study his instrument at age six with distinguished teacher Eleanore Schoenfeld. At 13 Rosen was heard by legendary cellist Gregor Piatigorsky during a local competition, and on the basis of this performance Piatigorsky agreed to take Rosen under his wing. At 17 Rosen first traveled to Moscow and was awarded a secondary prize in the 1966 Tchaikovsky Competition along with three other Americans.
