Eugene Goossens most ambitious and epic work, The Apocalypse, has had few performances since its premiere in Sydney Town Hall in 1954. This recording was made to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, in 1982. It is a grand work, full of colours and drama, and in the words of conductor Myer Fredman, 'the orchestration is brilliant'.

The Alban Berg Quartet excel in 18th-century repertory and the Franz Josef Haydn found here makes up an especially excellent example of this ensemble’s playing. The music is great, too: the two late Op. 77 Quartets quartets are what I believe are the finest examples he penned in this genre.

On this recording of Boccherini’s Arie da Concerto, the Belgian ensemble Capriola di Gioia defies the stubborn stereotyping of Boccherini as the gallant master of unsurpassable but insignificant melodies. Close listening to this marvellous music reveals a genius with a profound understanding of human psychology, and a rich harmonic palette to paint the smallest affective nuances. In these arias, Boccherini is rehabilitated as a true heir of Händel, a worthy contemporary to Haydn, and an early precursor of the belcanto of Bellini.
