Chicano Batman is making their boldest statement yet with "Freedom Is Free:, their third album and ATO Records debut. Following recent tours with Jack White and Alabama Shakes as well as festival dates at Coachella and Bonnaroo, the quartet worked with producer Leon Michels in his Diamond Mine Recording studio in Long Island City, NY. Michels, a veteran in the New York soul scene, has performed in Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, The Black Keys and The Menahan Street Band. In addition to tracking the album to analog tape, Michels contributed keyboards and his trademark horn arrangements (he's been sampled by Jay-Z and Ghostface Killah).

Victor Mechanick is not a beginner. Falling into music at a young age, this young Parisian integrates the conservatory at the age of 5, studying violin and trumpet, solfeggio and harmony. So the music, he knows and rather well. Later, the artist learns piano and guitar, creates his first bands and performs in France regularly. Victor Mechanick has been a part of Theo Lawrence & The Hearts.

Andy LaVerne is featured playing two Yamaha grand pianos on this session, though it was not your typical overdub; it was essentially done live with LaVerne playing first on one instrument equipped with a disklavier (essentially a computer that records all the nuances of what's played) and accompanying the first performance live on a second piano, enabling better interaction. LaVerne's hypnotic "Pair Of Chairs" introduces the concept with success, while Bill Evans' little known "Orbit" is given a Brazilian flavor. "Maiden Voyage" works particularly well with two pianos, which would be very difficult to pull off as a solo; then in Chick Corea's "Spain" LaVerne makes use of the full range of both keyboards combined for a richly textured arrangement. This is a very interesting experiment worth acquiring by fans of duo piano.
