Its performance and firepower superiority struck fear into both German and Japanese pilots, and ensured the safety of bombers over Berlin.
`Мустанг` стал без преувеличения лучшим американским истребителем Второй мировой войны. 281 летчик из числа воевавших на самолетах этого типа получили титул `ас`. Именно на `Мустанге` летчик Урбан Дрю сбил в 1944 г. два реактивных истребителя Ме - 262. Построенный в количестве 15550 экземпляров, `Мустанг` уступает по массовости только `Тандерболту`, но по многим летным и боевым характеристикам превосходит его. С дополнительными топливными баками `Мустанг` мог преодолеть расстояние в 1200 км, сопровождаяв дальних рейдах `Летающие крепости`. Единственное, чего недоставало этой прекрасной машине - это авиационной пушки. Впрочем, `Мустанг` и без нее воевал великолепно, расписавшись золотыми буквами в Книге истории.
