One would be hard-pressed to name a rock album whose influence has been as broad and pervasive as The Velvet Underground & Nico. While it reportedly took over a decade for the album's sales to crack six figures, glam, punk, new wave, goth, noise, and nearly every other left-of-center rock movement owes an audible debt to this set…

Though the Seeds' third album, 1967's Future, was pegged by critics as the band's attempt to ride the wave of baroque/psychedelic/orchestral magic the Beatles defined with Sgt. Pepper's, the recording was actually complete before the release of the Beatles' far more popular breakthrough album, making it impossible for the influence to touch the uncannily similarly minded flower power tones of Future. The Seeds had their own relatively huge smash with the raw high-pressure garage thumper "Pushin' Too Hard" the year before, and saw nothing wrong with recycling that tune's melody on more than a few songs on their first two albums…

In May 1967, when Maynard Ferguson was invited to appear at the Expo 67 Canadian Pavilion in Montreal, his Roulette period was behind him but his style and musical tastes had not really changed. Although he did not appear on record at all in 1966 (other than the soundtrack of a television show) and would not have a regular orchestra until 1970, the music on this CD sounds very much as if it were being played by an edition of the Maynard Ferguson Big Band. The obscure sidemen (all local players gathered together for the occasion) boast high musicianship and a few excellent (but unfortunately unidentified) soloists. MF is the main star throughout, showing off his remarkable technique and coming up with consistently exciting and generally creative solos in addition to enthusiastically leading the shouting ensembles.

Face to Face was a remarkable record, but its follow-up, Something Else, expands its accomplishments, offering 13 classic British pop songs. As Ray Davies' songwriting becomes more refined, he becomes more nostalgic and sentimental, retreating from the psychedelic and mod posturings that had dominated the rock world. Indeed, Something Else sounds like nothing else from 1967. The Kinks never rock very hard on the album, preferring acoustic ballads, music hall numbers, and tempered R&B to full-out guitar attacks. Part of the album's power lies in its calm music, since it provides an elegant support for Davies' character portraits and vignettes. From the martial stomp of "David Watts" to the lovely, shimmering "Waterloo Sunset," there's not a weak song on the record, and several - such as the allegorical "Two Sisters," the Noël Coward-esque "End of the Season," the rolling "Lazy Old Sun," and the wry "Situation Vacant" - are stunners…

Deliver (also known as The Mamas & the Papas Deliver) is the third studio album by the Mamas & the Papas, released in February 1967 on Dunhill Records. One song, "Creeque Alley", outlines the unique circumstances in which the band met and formed. Other songs on the album are covers of popular hits from years past. The album debuted on Billboard's Top LPs chart on March 18, 1967 and reached its peak position of No. 2 just three weeks later. It spent a total of 55 weeks on the Top LPs chart. The album was first issued on CD in 1988 (MCAD-31044) and is included in its entirety on All the Leaves Are Brown, a retrospective compilation of the band's first four albums and various singles.

At long last, a CD full of the falsetto pop king’s wonderful Columbia recordings – including all the singles and 15 previously unreleased masters. Lou Christie’s four-octave range is one of the most exciting and readily identifiable sounds of 1960s pop. He scored international successes with ‘The Gypsy Cried’, ‘Two Faces Have I’ (both 1963), ‘Lightnin’ Strikes’, ‘Rhapsody In The Rain’ (both 1966) and ‘I’m Gonna Make You Mine’ (1969), before cutting one of his most enduring songs, ‘Beyond The Blue Horizon’, in 1973. He would go on to release duets with Pia Zadora and Lesley Gore, record the beloved eco-concept album “Paint America Love”, and even make one of the earliest rap records with 1981’s ‘Guardian Angels’.
