Vaughan Williams had been interested in folk music since he was a boy. In December 1903, he noted down the tune of Bushes and Briars from a 70 year-old labourer who lived in the Essex village of Ingrave. Over the next ten years he collected more than 800 songs, and they had a profound effect on his development as a composer. Particularly significant was a week long visit to King’s Lynn in 1905, during which he collected some 30 songs. One was The Captain’s Apprentice as sung by the fisherman James Carter. This melody was used in the Norfolk Rhapsody No 1, the Sea Symphony and the Pastoral Symphony. Another was Ward the Pirate, used as a theme in both the first and second Rhapsodies.

Krystian Zimerman, Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra present Ludwig van Beethoven's 5 piano concertos. The exceptional Polish pianist Krystian Zimerman, together with Leonard Bernstein, presented an outstanding reference recording of Beethoven's Piano Concertos Nos 3, 4 and 5 more than 30 years ago (1989). At the time, both agreed on their commitment to music - in mind, heart and soul - which led to an extraordinary recording. Unfortunately, Bernstein died before the cycle was completed.

Sam (Floating Points): Pharoah… Pharoah: Huh…? Sam: Were you asleep? I'm sorry… Pharoah: No no… I was listening… and dreaming… and listening to music in my head… Sam: Oh wow… sorry. Pharoah: Many times, people think I might be asleep… but in fact, I am just listening to music in my head. I'm always listening… to the sounds around me… and playing, in my mind… and sometimes I dream. Sam: What were you dreaming about? Pharoah: I'm on a ship. In the ocean.

Composed in 1803, while Beethoven was also writing the ‘Eroica’ Symphony, Christ on the Mount of Olives (Christus am Ölberge) is the composer’s only oratorio and combines the emotive force of his later Missa Solemnis with the theatre of a Bach Passion. With orchestra, chorus and soloists, it tells the story of Jesus’ prayer and arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane and also reflects the emotional pressure Beethoven was under at the time.

Bringing his acclaimed Mendelssohn cycle to a rousing conclusion, Sir John Eliot Gardiner presents the composer s symphony-cantata, 'Lobgesang', in his first ever performance of the work. Three world-class soloists join the LSO and his own Monteverdi Choir for this recording for LSO Live. Mendelssohn wrote that the piece 'lies very near my heart', and with its stately grandeur and religiosity, plus its sheer magnitude, twice the length of any of his other symphonies, it stands amongst his most impressive works.

Amazon Review by Heidi
Wow! What an extraordinary version of Purple Rain by the LSO, I bought the CD for that 1 song. It is so true to the original with how it is gradually built up and finishing with the many layers as the great man originally wrote it. And the guitar solo! Just beautiful, such a magnificent effort by the LSO. This song is the most beautiful song in the universe, often covered badly, but the LSO have performed it mafnificently. I have a feeling that even Prince himself would appreciate this version. Well done LSO!
