Luigi Moretti was a nobleman, a scholar, a music teacher and a composer whose main works are dedicated to the guitar, although he produced remarkable compositions for voice and piano as well. He was one of the finest members of the splendid Italian guitar season of the first quarter of the 19th century whose works were inexplicably long forgotten. Thanks to the talent and pioneering spirit of Marcello Fantoni, Dynamic is proud to fill this void and release this World Premiere Recording of Moretti’s instrumental works, which reveal the expert hand of an up-to-date and cosmopolitan composer and feature the remarkable interpretative skills of a young and talented guitarist.

Federico Mompou was the shy post-Romantic, Roberto Gerhard the gregarious Modernist. Quite unalike in personality, in artistic aims and language, the two nonetheless held each other in high esteem. Like so many other composers, Mompou began to write guitar music having met and been inspired by Andrés Segovia. This friendship principally yielded the six-movement Suite Compostelana.

Between dozens of recordings made from 1937 to 1950, legendary French gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt waxed one, maybe two titles of solo guitar per year. Often it was less than that. Sometimes he made them at the request of the producers, who surely heard him warming up and decided to capture on records some of that magic atmosphere. Then Django took his instrument and performed whatever was on his mind: in occasions fully developed solo compositions; another times, instantly made up improvisations. This outstanding CD comprises them all for the first time in chronological order, including some very rare tracks and a recently discovered solo from a radio program as a bonus track.

German guitarist Franz Halász displays a fine sense of tone and pacing in this revealing overview of Takemitsu's solo guitar music. Takemitsu wrote for the concert stage in an original avant-garde idiom, created over 100 film soundtracks, and produced arrangements of Japanese folk tunes and Western popular music. This range, except for the soundtracks, is represented here. The title tracks are from the concert work All in Twilight – Four pieces for guitar (1987), inspired by Paul Klee's painting of the same name. Here Halász's beautiful touch is shown in contrasting and subtle timbres on the composer's rich, jazz-like harmonies, sometimes brooding, sometimes in quickly flowing passages like those of the third movement. Next, the first six of "12 Songs" introduces some technically challenging, but aesthetically straightforward arrangements – Sammy Fain's classic Secret Love, four tunes by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and George Gershwin's Summertime in which Takemitsu spectacularly manages to reduce the best orchestral parts to the limits of the guitar and to improvise in a free-flowing manner.
