Gilels recorded this work several times, and the dierence to the other stereo recording in print is evident instantly. Just play the rst 10 seconds from the Gilels/Maazel recording and then this one: RCA in 1955 captured a cleaner, better, richer sound than EMI engineers 20 years later. So you are instantly captivated by the sound alone; and then follows a performance with tremendous sweep and boldness. Reiner is denitely instrumental in helping this along: he was a far better conductor than Maazel could ever aspire to. In a word: don't worry too much about niggling imperfections.

After a successful early career in Hollywood as a jazz musician and arranger, André Previn transitioned into the world of classical music, making a name for himself in London for his innovative programming and refreshing reappraisals of many warhorses, in particular in English and Russian music. Tchaikovsky was one of the composers that Previn was good at. The 1812 orchestral songs are also known as well-known recordings and have been reprinted several times in the CD era. "Manfred Symphony" is a great performance that shed light on this work that had not been recorded much before, and LP has long been known for its excellent recording audio files.

Romeo and Juliet begins with 4 minutes of an intriguing, mysterious, adagio theme, followed at 5 minutes by an energetic, allegro theme. At 8 minutes we hear a beautiful, adagio melody over rippling French horns. After that, the existing themes are developed to express passion. Francesca da Ramini has an opening theme that evokes a netherworld. Thereafter Tchaikovsky extensively develops a powerful theme. Then at 10 minutes a clarinet begins a beautiful melody to be continued by violins then flute. Near the end the piece builds to a climax.
