The saying that "life begins at 40" is certainly open to debate – especially if you live in a youth-obsessed culture like the United States. But for jazz artists, there can be some truth in that saying; the history of jazz is full of artists who did some of their best work after 40. Joe Pass is a perfect example; Pass turned 40 in 1969, and the '70s were an amazingly productive time for the late guitar icon (who recorded frequently during that decade thanks to Pablo founder Norman Granz). In fact, Pass did so much recording during the '70s that albums of previously unreleased material were still coming out long after his death from cancer in 1994. Virtuoso in New York, for example, is an album of recordings that went unreleased for 29 years; recorded in 1975, these Granz-produced performances didn't see the light of day until 2004.

"One" is the debut full-length studio album by UK progressive rock act Cirkus. Formed from the ashes of bands Moonhead and Lucas Tyson, the group's high standard of musicianship was well known in their native north-east where they attracted much attention and had a devoted following. It was felt that the quintet could achieve success on a national scale, provided management handled matters properly and they got the right breaks. In 1973 they recorded their debut album "Cirkus One" at Sound Associates/Emison & Air Studios and just 1000 copies were pressed up. It is widely regarded by many collectors today as the most musically accomplished private pressing of its kind to emerge out of the UK's then burgeoning progressive music scene, influenced by KING CRIMSON and YES.

A folk music legend, Sylvia Tyson's impact on popular culture is immeasurable. A pillar of the Greenwich Village folk scene from 1959 through the 60's as half of the groundbreaking duo Ian & Sylvia, they headlined NYC's Carnegie Hall and topped the Billboard charts, all the while championing Village contemporaries Bob Dylan & Gordon Lightfoot by being the first popular artists to record their songs. Her own song "You Were On My Mind" and Ian's "Four Strong Winds" became standards and were covered by dozens of popular artists."It's the good times I remember at the end of the day," sings Sylvia Tyson on her new album, a collection of songs that look backward across a life well-lived, and offer advice for those just starting their journey. She sings of memories, family histories and lost loves, while also offering pragmatic advice for how to handle love and rough times. It's an album she could only write now, after a lifetime of honing her craft and studying human nature as a revere

It's quite difficult to find a young person who knows about the Scorpions. Even when their careers were peaking in the '80s, they were never widely recognized, existing always as more of an underground band. The lack of hit singles produced by the group is by no means a judgment of its talent, however, as Deadly Sting: The Mercury Years proves. Some may find the fact that Mercury made the compilation a double-disc set surprising – again due to the band's small following – but the album is far better than the single-disc collection Best of Rockers 'n' Ballads. Following chronologically from 1979 to 1993 (thus covering the years in which the band enjoyed its most success)…

Tear Down These Walls is the seventh solo studio album by British recording artist Billy Ocean. It was originally released in January 1988 by Jive and Arista as the follow-up to Ocean's critically and commercially successful 1986 album Love Zone. It features guest backing vocalists, including The Manhattans, Will Downing, Carroll Thompson, and Mary Cassidy, and is generally regarded as the culmination of the smoother, more adult-oriented sound of Ocean's later work. On release, the album was received favourably by the majority of music critics. Ocean's second most commercially successful solo album, it went on to peak at #3 on the UK Albums Chart and reached #18 on the Billboard 200. The album launched four charting singles in the UK. "Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car" peaked at #3 on the UK Singles Chart; "Calypso Crazy" peaked at #35; "The Colour of Love" at #65; "Stand and Deliver" at #97.

Released on 21 October 1985 by record label Virgin (A&M in the US), "Once Upon A Time" topped the UK charts, and peaked at #10 on the US charts, spending five consecutive weeks in the Top 10 of Billboard and 16 weeks in the Top 20. Four singles were taken from the album: "Alive And Kicking" (UK #7, US #3), "All The Things She Said" (UK #9, US #28), "Sanctify Yourself" (UK #10, US #14), and "Ghost Dancing" (UK #13). Music critic MacKenzie Wilson has retrospectively praised the album for AllMusic, stating that it provided listeners with a "raw energy and solid composition not entirely captured on previous albums." He also particularly lauded singles "Alive and Kicking" and "Sanctify Yourself."

"Inside Story" is the 8th studio album by Jamaican singer, songwriter and model Grace Jones, released in November 1986, her first with the Manhattan Records label. The album spawned the hit single "I'm Not Perfect (But I'm Perfect for You)". "Inside Story" would become one of Jones' greatest album successes, making the Top 40 in a number of European countries. Despite being her lowest-charting album in the UK, it still sold well enough in the British market to be certified Silver there. The album also remains her last entry to date on the US Billboard 200 albums chart.

"Pipes of Peace" is the 4th solo studio album by English singer-songwriter Paul McCartney, released in 1983. As the follow-up to the popular "Tug of War", the album came close to matching the commercial success of its predecessor in Britain but peaked only at #15 on America's Billboard 200 albums chart. While "Pipes of Peace" was the source of international hit singles such as "Say Say Say" (recorded with Michael Jackson) and the title track, the critical response to the album was less favourable than that afforded to "Tug of War".

Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson - two key soulful talents from the 60s, working together beautifully here in a mid 80s set! The album's almost more Randy's than it is Nancy's given that Lewis takes a few tunes instrumentally, working in a blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation that's very much in his best early 80s Columbia Records mode. But things really come together when Nancy joins in - bringing her mature, soulful approach to the tunes - and really tying them together wonderfully with her vocals! Stanley Clarke produced, and there's definitely some echoes here of his own music of the time - and titles include "Ram", "Quiet Storm", "Never Wanna Say Goodnight", "Closer Than Close", and "Breaker Beat".
