Originally released in 1972, Weird Scenes Inside the Gold Mine was one of the earliest "best-of" Doors collections, compiling 22 tracks from the band not just limited to their many ubiquitous hits but including some more experimental tunes and a few obscure B-sides. This strange and sprawling playlist is heavy on material from L.A. Woman, and seems particularly invested in the darker, more sinister side of the band. Lesser-known songs here include "Who Scared You" and the goofy, awkward blues run "(You Need Meat) Don't Go No Further" sung by keyboardist Ray Manzarek. With the exception of a few pop moments, this lengthy collection sets a heavy and sometimes menacing mood, highlighting the Doors' most depraved, shamanistic moments in tracks like the brooding "The End," "Maggie McGill," and the absolutely evil groove of "When the Music's Over."

Recorded in 1995, this Esther was first issued as Collins Classics 7040-2 early the following year. Like Hogwood, Harry Christophers recorded the original 1718 version of what has gone down in history as Handel’s first English oratorio.
In point of fact, the complex and still largely unresolved history of Esther suggests that it was not originally composed as an oratorio at all, but rather as a staged work that would have formed a companion to the near-contemporary Acis and Galatea.

Limited Deluxe two CD edition includes bonus disc of rarities & live tracks. 2023 studio release from the Britpop band. Given encouragement by the tremendous reception of last year's live return and first album in more than two decades, the three-piece return with Eight. Marking perhaps their busiest ever year in 2023, the band makes up for lost time having been missing from the musical map since 1998 prior to reforming in 2021 and releasing their seventh album, Keep On With Falling, last March. Where last year's album, joyful in tone yet brooding with heavyweight lyrical themes, came together as an exploration of the isolated ideas of each member, Eight is, according to vocalist and co-songwriter, Sice formed of songs recorded "purposefully to appear together on an album." Before adding, "There is also a greater depth of integration, which means that it's more difficult to tell which member of the band the song originated with." Reflecting on Seeker, the new album's opening track, written about leaning on those we trust to share life's highs and lows, bassist and co-songwriter, Tim Brown says: "This song started out as a three-chord synth pop tune and mutated into a brassy bop courtesy of trumpeter, Nick Etwell. The electric guitar flourishes were added by Louis Smith before Sice added layers of backing vocals which help drive the song along and bring it to it's joyful conclusion."

Beatles covers are a dicey proposition at best. Even the most ingenious and unique rendition seems destined to suffer in comparison to the original, and the potential for failure is virtually limitless – either way, it's an idea as sound as remaking Citizen Kane with Pauly Shore in the title role. And yet artists are drawn to the Lennon/McCartney songbook like bees to honey, their desire to cover these songs best likened to a creative death wish – We Can Work It Out assembles 16 of these kamikaze missions, and believe it or not, despite the inevitable wreckage there's also a handful of survivors. Setting loose these familiar songs in jazz and funk modes far removed from the Beatles' original recordings enables greater room for personalization and innovation, and the artists featured here are hardly slouches, either – Ike & Tina Turner (who know a thing or two about making covers their own – ask John Fogerty) deliver a gritty, low-down version of "Come Together," Stevie Wonder invests "We Can Work It Out" with the boundless optimism and sensitivity of his own music, and Earth, Wind & Fire update McCartney's Motown tribute "Got to Get You Into My Life" in accordance with the updated rules of the soul handbook. A bonus-mix CD courtesy of 4hero's Marc Mac rounds out a set far better than it has any right to be. (AMG)
