After a few months I sent some finished melodies, chords and sketches to my friend, Austrian drummer, composer and band leader, Reini Schmölzer, whom I met in 2013 when I started working as professor for double bass at the Kunst Uni Graz, Austria. Reini was given the freedom to arrange, orchestrate, interpret my music and write for the string quartet.

As the name implies, the album “Two In The Mirror” points out that two highly profiled Jazz musicians whose success mirrors far beyond Germany’s borders have found one another and joined forces in an intriguing and unanticipated dialog. Vladyslav Sendecki is viewed as one of the most vibrant and creative pianists on the European Jazz scene. The German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung praised him as a “master of emotion who spawns gripping musical virtuosity.” In New York, the Village Voice named him as one of the 5 currently most significant Jazz pianists in the world. Al Jarreau’s endorsement: “Vladyslav Sendecki is highly ranked among the great pianists of the last 100 years, with Herbie, Chick and Duke and Jarrett.” On the flip side of the coin, for 15 years Jürgen Spiegel has been the driving rhythmical force and sensitive audiophonic painter in the Tingvall Trio, highly acclaimed worldwide and meanwhile, alongside Till Brönner, regarded as a “figurehead” for German Jazz in an international context. What’s more, over the last few years Jürgen Spiegel has also made a name for himself as producer for a variety of music and video projects. These days the two of them who have made Hamburg their home hooked up in the studio for a duo project in an out-of-the-ordinary piano/drums constellation. Poetry meets dynamics, virtuoso talent with a fine-tuned tête-à-tête, freedom with exchanging emotions.

Rick Derringer's 1980 release Face to Face is a disappointing return to mediocrity after the fresh and fun Guitars and Women album from the previous year. The majority of the tracks are heavy, piano-led ballads that Derringer can't pull off due to his Twiggy-thin vocals. The only songs that give any indication of Derringer's strengths are the rocking "I Want a Lover" and the sticky-sweet bubblegum pop tune "Let the Music Play," though his guitar pyrotechnics on the cover of Neil Young's "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)" and the overly long "Jump, Jump, Jump" give you an idea of why he was a much sought-after sideman. Mostly the record sounds like it was cut by a guy who is out of gas and out of ideas.

Abdullah Ibrahim's discography goes back sixty years, and although there are longer periods between his releases than there used to be, Ibrahim has retained all his grit and jubilance. The pianist and composer continues to make gloriously uplifting music steeped in its South African roots, in a style which still carries echoes of his formative overseas influences, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk.
