Whereas earlier editions cleanly wrapped up singles, EP tracks, compilations appearances, and other non-album effluvia of a specific era, Pulse of the Early Brain, the fifth installment of Stereolab's odds-and-sods series spans almost the entirety of the band's original, pre-2019 reunion existence, making for a notably less sonically cohesive collection.

A renowned poet has a new album out Friday titled “The Gospel According To Nikki Giovanni.” In addition to publishing dozens of poetry works, Nikki Giovanni has recorded several spoken word albums over the course of 50 years. But this time, she’s doing something a little different. The new album, a collaboration with saxophonist Javon Jackson, is a collection of gospel hymns and spirituals set to jazz. Growing up in the Baptist church, Giovanni says gospel music was instrumental to understanding herself as a poet. “The spirituals had a message,” she says. “They weren't just some people woke up one morning or came from working in the evening and said, ‘Oh, let's sit down and sing.’ They were sharing information with each other.”

The Munich Philharmonic has arguably given more performances of Anton Bruckner’s music than any other orchestra. In one of the few interviews he granted, Boris Tischenko declared that he had always acknowledged the piano to be an ideal synthesis of the symphonic orchestra. In spite of this, his piano writing reveals his very deep faith in its most characteristic possibilities; from certain standpoints, it is reminiscent of that of those who knew the keyboard best and of its greatest specialists. In this sense, his Sonata no. 4 op. 53 (written in 1972, and dedicated not to a person, but rather to one of his favourite cities, Prague) is really emblematic.

Swedish bassist/cellist Lars Danielsson is a master improviser, who completely engages listeners by taking them on journeys of both pleasure and wonder, with themes which are always expressive and song-like. He is far too classy and refined a musician to indulge in superficial virtuosic display. Danielsson's well-honed, naturally lyrical improvisational lines remain at the service of the flow of the music, something particularly noticeable when he steps forward and takes on the role of soloist. These core traits are also there in his extensive and much-praised work as arranger, composer and bandleader.

bar italia, the London trio of Nina Cristante, Jezmi Tarik Fehmi and Sam Fenton, release their new album Tracey Denim, on Matador Records. Tracey Denim was recorded and produced by bar italia with mixing from Marta Salogni. It features the single “Nurse!” which was released in March to acclaim, and described as “a hypnotic post-punk ballad” (The Guardian) and “narcotically arresting” (Pitchfork).
