80's Riff

Riff Raff is a 1984 album by Welsh rock musician Dave Edmunds. The album was his third release for Arista Records (in the UK) and Columbia Records (in the US), following 1983's Information. Riff Raff continued Edmunds' collaboration with Electric Light Orchestra frontman Jeff Lynne; Lynne produced six tracks on the albums, and wrote three of the songs as well. However, compared to the pair's success with Information (which hit #51 on the Billboard 200 album chart and spawned a top-40 single in "Slipping Away"), Riff Raff was a commercial flop. The album made it to only #140, and the single "Something About You" failed to crack the Billboard Hot 100 at all (although it did hit #18 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart).

As far as the more casual observer is concerned, the prog rock revival of the 80s was kicked off by Marillion and their ‘Market Square Heroes’ EP and subsequent hit album ‘Script for A Jester’s Tear’ in 1983. Marillion certainly flew the flag for prog’s unexpected commercial success during that decade, but the rumblings of a brilliant, but terminally unfashionable musical revival had actually begun much earlier.

This album is a great thrashfest with some power-metal atmosphere, and nice speed metal moments as well. It can, interestingly enough, be put in between "The Dark" and "Blessing in Disguise" in the overall Metal Church evolution - it make sense chronologically, and the songs tend to be a combination of the overtly fast and furious style of "The Dark", the more restrained and progressive thrash constructions of the second half of "Blessing in Disguise", and the even more drawn out compositions with many movements and acoustic interludes of the first half of "Blessing"…
