Reel Recordings isn't simply another jazz reissue label; it has already made its mark by priding itself on not only reissuing important British jazz benchmarks but assuring the record-buying public of high fidelity — that is, crystalline sonic reproduction and an unerring commitment to quality in both packaging and sound, both of which are in danger of becoming extinct in this soulless, downloading age.

Bridges are a symbol of bringing people together, of communicating with each other, of connecting ideas. What else could reading bridges in the context of the music we usually talk about here mean but presenting different approaches of making music and trying to understand how communication works? Who else but Ken Vandermark has been constantly presenting such approaches by crossing the borders between hardcore jazz/punk (with The Flying Luttenbachers), noise core (with Zu), free funk (with Made to Break), new classical music and of course with his various free jazz/improv projects (everything from duos to larger ensembles like Audio One or the Resonance Ensemble) – and these are only a few examples! Ken Vandermark is simply one of the great masters of notated music and completely free improvisation.

May 2022; long on the C.P. radar/wishlist (all but inaccessible until very recently) has been the replication-production of the original 1962/1971 LP/10" editions of storied German-American Electronic & Computer Music pioneer Herbert Brün's semi-Instructional releases, "Klänge Unterwegs Und Anepigraphe" (1961) & "Über Musik Und Zum Computer" (1971). Fate (and sympathy) have wrested their kind hands and copies of both were semi-permanently loaned to the C.P. P.T.B. with the express interest in seeing their contents reprised and disseminated in the now-familiar spec, and I'm glad to present this late-stage Creel Pone presenting Brün's work across the first three decades of his Compositional career, as it was originally issued during the vinyl era.

Cornelius Cardew was the fundamental figure in the British avant-garde of the 1960s. Cardew grew up in Cornwall and at the age of 17 entered the Royal Academy of Music in London. Cardew developed an interest in electronic music, and in 1957 traveled to Germany to study in the Cologne-based electronic music studio of composer Gottfried Michael Koenig. Cardew then joined Karlheinz Stockhausen as his assistant. Cardew stayed with Stockhausen for three years, working on the latter's massive multi-orchestral work Carré.

This outstanding two-CD survey of the piano music of Christian Wolff comes courtesy of the composer's longtime friend, pianist John Tilbury, with a little help from Matchless label boss (and fellow AMM mainstay) Eddie Prévost and the composer himself. Wolff's studies with John Cage began at the tender of age of 16, and "For Prepared Piano" (1951) is an affectionate nod toward the rhythmic procedures of his teacher, who sent his student off to the hotbed of avant-garde Europe that same year to meet Pierre Boulez.
