In October 2006, expert pianist Eddie Higgins started on a challenging project. Higgins, together with Jay Leonhart and Mark Taylor, went into the studio and performed 50 love songs that had not been previously performed on another album. These tracks are set to be released as four albums. A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening is the second in the series.

Spectacular playing by Higgins accompanied and backed by Jay Leonhart on bass and Mark Taylor on drums. I will confess that my favorite drummer who was frequently a member of Higgins' trios was Joe Ascione, but Taylor is perfect on this album. If you are a Higgins fan, then you are probably familiar with Leonhart who is almost telepathically connected to Higgins.

A large improvement over her previous set, this outing by veteran singer Dakota Staton finds her in excellent form. The repertoire is mostly comprised of veteran standards, highlighted by "Isn't This a Lovely Day," "Cold Cold Feeling," "The Masquerade Is Over" and a medley of "I'll Close My Eyes" and "Close Your Eyes." Staton uses her vibrato more sparingly than on her previous (and weaker) Muse release Darling Please Save Your Love for Me, and there is much more variety in these arrangements. Assisted by either Bross Townsend or Norman Simons on piano and a fine rhythm section, Staton is also joined on various tracks by Rob Paparozzi's harmonica, saxophonist Peter Loeb and guitarist George Naha. Musical maestro Jools Holland has teamed up with international artist Marc Almond to release A Lovely Life To Live. This album has been more than ten years in the making, with Jools and Marc having toured together periodically since 2006. A Lovely Live To Live showcases the brilliant live sound and musicianship between Jools, Marc and the well-renowned Rhythm & Blues Orchestra when they perform together on stage as one ensemble. The 14-track album is a fantastic collection of both brand new, original tracks written by Jools and Marc as well as their big band interpretations of a wide range of songs. Highlights include Marc and Soft Cell's iconic Tainted Love, Edith Piaf's Hymne ò L'amour, Irving Berlin's How Deep Is The Ocean as well as two Bobby "Blue" Bland songs - 'It's My Life Baby' and 'I'll Take Care Of You'.

Repertoire records has sort of confused the issue of Herman's Hermits CDs by releasing this 25-song compilation in 1994 and then, in 2000, re-releasing the soundtrack Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter on CD. To clarify, this is not the soundtrack to the 1968 movie, but a collection of the group's 1964-1965 sides from various singles and EPs. Some of it will surprise listeners who think of Herman's Hermits as the poppiest component of the British Invasion and barely a rock & roll group at all - regardless of who is actually playing on "Walking With My Baby" or "Dream On," those are as solid as any early album track by the Hollies, and they don't do a bad version of "For Your Love" either; they even make an attempt at a slightly bluesier sound on "I Wonder," though this was clearly not Peter Noone's vocal forte…
