Selina Ott presents here selected works by Dmitri Shostakovich, André Jolivet and Mieczyslaw Weinberg. Shostakovich’s Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings is notable for a prevailing parodistic tone, which scarcely occurs in this form in any of his other works. Many of the themes that lend the music the distorted face of the grotesque are heard in the trumpet.
The choice of instruments of André Jolivet’s Concertino for Trumpet, Piano and Strings is exactly the same as that of Shostakovich’s work, but the latter is more of a piano concerto, while Jolivet’s is more of a trumpet concerto. Like Shostakovich, Mieczyslaw Weinberg also incorporates several quotations into the final movement of his Trumpet Concerto (1967), for example the fanfare from Mendelssohn’s Wedding March. Referred to by Shostakovich as "symphony for trumpet and orchestra", the Concerto presents music of a taut inner structure and logical consistency.

Matilda Lloyd is a fast-rising star of the trumpet world, having won the BBC Young Musician of the year Brass Final as well as the Eric Aubier International Trumpet Competition, and having made an impressive solo debut at the BBC Proms. Matilda's debut album reflects her desire to broaden the trumpet repertoire, with no fewer than three works recorded for the first time, by composers Giles Swayne, Deborah Pritchard and Alex Woolf. Also included on the recording are forgotten works of the 20th and 21st centuries by Jacques Castérède and Raymond Gallois Montbrun alongside staples of the trumpet repertoire, such as Enescu's Légende and Peter Maxwell Davies's impressive showpiece, Sonata for Trumpet and Piano Op.1.

In an orchestra, the trumpet, at least until the beginning of the 20th century, is mainly being used to play some kind of fanfare, announcing glory, war or victory. It is safe to say that only in jazz this instrument has shown its full sonic and emotional potential. The muted trumpet of Miles Davis has nothing to do with triumph. But of course, jazz trumpet players can just as well use the techniques and styles of classically trained musicians. In a decent jazz orchestra, first trumpet and drummer always take the lead.

…This is another winner for MDG in the sound department. There is a palpable sense of “place”, of being somewhere specific, conveyed by the 2+2+2 sound; it is suitably reverberant but not overwhelming. The piano is realistically distant (no under-the-lid clarity here), and its bass register is rich and strong. But the cornet/trumpet is the star of the show, and Mr. Bauer’s golden tone blooms beautifully in the ample recorded space, wherever that is. A superbly planned and executed recital in perfect sound. What more could you want?

The accompaniment on all four concertos is provided by the Berlin Philharmonic and Herbert von Karajan and, as one can imagine, it is idiomatic and brilliant. Fans of Maurice André should rejoice to have all of these recordings available on one disc and if you've never heard André before, it's high time you did.

Like alchemists of old, attempting to recombine the four elements, here Fábio Brum presents four distinct musical languages in a programme forged during lockdown. Gabriele Roberto’s Tokyo Suite charts the astonishment of a traveller dazzled by the vast megapolis, whereas Dimitri Cervo’s The Brazilian Four Seasons offers a colourful, energetic panorama of the natural and human worlds. Fábio Brum’s very personal musical journey is highlighted by the contrast between the Talmudic contemplation of Menachem Zur’s De Profundis and the abstract ruminations of Nicola Tescari’s Trumpet Concerto ‘Nine Moods’.
