The music on this recording demonstrates how composers in Germany, Italy, Austria and England responded to the challenges of writing for violin senza basso. Music for violin senza basso had a distinguished history before Bach and was widely cultivated by his contemporaries. Violinistic virtuosity was extraordinarily experimental in the late seventeenth century, with novelties in the tuning of the strings (scordaura), bowing techniques, chordal playing and contrapuntal textures (with the development of sophisticated double-, triple- and quadruple-stopping techniques) and playing in high positions. This disc of solo violin music is a real mixture of some of Rachel’s favourite pieces. Rachel Podger is one of the most creative talents to emerge in the field of period performance. Over the last two decades she has established herself as a leading interpreter of the music of the Baroque and Classical periods.

When he was a boy, Kodaly taught himselfwith virtually no professional guidance-to play the piano, the violin and the cello, partly in order to take part in domestic music-making (his father, a station master employed by the Hungarian state railways, was an amateur violinist, his mother sang and played the piano), and his chamber music for strings all dates from relatively early in his working life, between 1905 and 1918. It includes three major works that feature the cello in a virtuoso capacity: the Sonata for cello and piano, Op. 4(1909-10), the Duo for violin and cello, Op. 7 (1914) and the Sonata for solo cello, Op. 8 (1915).

Within the last 7 years of his life Johannes Brahms dedicated himself to chamber music and many people would agree that in this period he produced the most profound music in his entire writing career. While at Bad Ischl, his constant encounters with J. Strauss, but also with the great clarinetist Richar Mühlfeld, inspired Brahms to produce such fine examples of the chamber music repertoire known today. The 2 clarinet sonatas, which he also transcribed for the viola, are quite melancholic in comparison with the other clarinet opuses which he wrote just before. Brahms was also deeply saddened by the sudden loss of his great friend and muse Clara Schumann. As they shared wonderful long term artistic and personal relationship, quite possibly they influenced each other in their composing as well.
