Charles Péguy and Julien Joubert have at least two things in common – they were both born in Orléans (separated by exactly a century) and both of them have a special relationship with the figure of Joan of Arc. At the age of 24, Julien Joubert read Jeanne d'Arc, a play written in 1897 by Charles Péguy – also aged 24 – who had just gained his teaching diploma. Péguy’s drama awakened in Julien Joubert the strong desire to compose. His first idea was to set it as a musical comedy, a crazy notion that he soon abandoned. A few years later, however, a kind of condensed version of this idea emerged, entitled Chansons pour Jeanne. It was another unfinished project that eventually gave birth to Elle pleurait… (Stabat Mater) – the commission for a religious musical work for Holy Week 2003. As an atheist, Joubert was not sure he wanted to embark on a piece of this kind; but reading the Latin poem of the Stabat Mater together with the Passion narrative that Péguy always included in his Mystère de la charité de Jeanne d'Arc (to which the poet had added 48 pages just at the moment of signing it off for printing) motivated the composer to complete the project, even though the commission had already been abandoned by its sponsor. Here we present Elle pleurait… (Stabat Mater) in two versions: one with Charles Péguy’s text, and one in a purely musical setting.

Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) was one of the most complete musicians of the Elizabethan era. He made talented contributions to every genre of vocal and instrumental music. In the domain of the fantasia for viols , he wrote for numerous combinations of between two and six instruments and elaborated endlessly inventive formal structures, in which traces of Italianism are by no means absent. L’Achéron offers us a wide selection from this repertory, which it has recorded on viols based on early seventeenth-century English models.

Johann Bernhard Bach (1676-1749) is a somewhat ill-known member of the family, but known by his first cousin once removed, Johann Sebastian. A disciple of Pachelbel, he was in the service of the court of Eisenach and left us only instrumental music. His four Ouvertures for orchestra constitute the obvious link between French music of the Grand Siècle and the compositions that Johann Sebastian would write in Weimar and Cöthen. A missing link to be (re) discovered.

Marin Marais published his last collection in 1725, eight years after the appearance of his Quatrième Livre de Pièces de Viole . He was no longer playing in the Chambre du Roi by that time and had moved to a house in the Faubourg Saint-Marceau where he cultivated plants and flowers in his garden. He continued, however, to give lessons to people who wanted to improve their viol playing. The Cinquième Livre de Pièces de Viole reflects this image of a peaceful life; today we regard it as the final testament of a musician who was looking back upon his past years as their undisputed master — and which he remains today.

In his Musick’s Monument of 1676, Thomas Mace described in great detail numerous aspects of contemporary musical life in London. This volume evokes all the characteristics of English music, going back to the most glorious years of the Renaissance, with a particular emphasis on the repertory written for consort of viols. While his writings describe the performing practices of the time, they also provide invaluable information on instrument making, which has enabled L’Achéron to build a ‘set’ of six viols following Mace’s indications. For this new project of English music, the ensemble inaugurates a new virginal and an organ made in accordance with the famous theorist’s specifications.

Marin Marais published his Quatrième Livre de Pièces de Viole two years after the death of Louis XIV, establishing himself as the undisputed master of the genre and providing pieces not only for musicians who had achieved some skill on the viol but also for the most virtuoso players. Here Marais reshaped the classical forms, altering the traditional sequence for the suites and making an increasing use of character pieces.

The Sainte-Colombe family remains a source of mystery to this day: the first name and the origins of the father, who taught Marin Marais and composed numerous pieces for one or two viols, remains hidden in the mists of time. The same obscurity surrounds his son or sons: records show a few traces of him in London and Edinburgh around 1700, although all that is really known of him comes from the Pieces de viole recorded here; these five suites of dances in the French style, including a Tombeau pour Mr de Sainte-Colombe le pere, have survived in a non-autograph manuscript. The version presented here breaks with the usual interpretations of these Pieces de Viole, as it includes a reconstruction of a basso continuo part as was common in works by composers of the son's generation. The non-autograph source that has survived gives a general feeling that something is missing in the harmonic structure, a lack that is here filled by this new basso continuo part. Reconstructed in the musical language and style of the time, the music of Sainte-Colombe's son here seems to come back to life; these pieces have not only recovered their full meaning but also reveal a sublime music.

In Swedish, Ljus means "light". It is this indescribable light, typical of the far north, that fascinated Marine Chagnon and Joséphine Ambroselli during their travels in Sweden. A light which, in a region of the world known for it's cold climate and long winter nights, struck them by it's brightness and warmth. This album is the memory of that light: it was born of a meeting between two passionate musicians who came together around Swedish melodies - melodies which these young artists interpreted in a very personal, luminous and warm way, bringing out the hope, the joy and the poetry of the most beautiful Scandinavian music.
