The Smetana Quartet are a true legend. For over four decades (1945-1989), the ensemble gained critical acclaim and enthused audiences all over world, particularly in the UK, USA and Japan. They attained perfect chime and extraordinary flexibility in voice leading, resulting in part from their playing the entire repertoire by heart. The quartet performed Beethoven's works throughout their existence - following Smetana, he was the composer on whose music they focused the most and whose complete quartets were in their repertoire from 1974 onwards.

This whopping 40-disc set, which sells for very little, contains familiar performances of the major works, and most of them are quite good. Symphonies Nos. 1-7 feature Kosler and the Slovak Philharmonic–not a first-class orchestra, but a fine conductor who gets the ensemble to play idiomatically and well. The Eighth is Menuhin's (not bad), the Ninth Paavo Järvi's (quite good). The concertos come from Vox and feature Firkusny (piano), Nelsova (cello), and Ricci (violin).

It was in 1964 a few years after an early foray into Beethoven with four of the works for RCA Victors Red Seal label that the Juilliard String Quartet embarked on this complete set. They started out with the three Razumovsky and Harp quartets, which Columbia released the next year on its subsidiary Epic label. The six Early Quartets, op. 18, followed in 196869; the Late Quartets in 196970, along with op. 95 to complete the set of Middle Quartets. By now all the Juilliard recordings were appearing on Columbia Masterworks, including their Beethoven in three separate volumes. In celebration of the 250th anniversary of Beethovens birth, Sony Classical is pleased to present the Juilliards complete cycle for the first time in a single box, newly remastered on nine albums.
