There is no point in getting snooty about Adriana Lecouvreur, it may be implausible melodrama, but has held the stage for just over one hundred years providing meaty fodder for monstres sacrés of all voice types. Classed as a verismo (realist) opera, which is a dubious appellation for an experience that includes dodgy rococo wigs and death by violets; it is an operatic equivalent of the sort of well made play that migrated from the boards, via opera to celluloid in Hollywood’s golden age. Antonín Dvorák’s success in Europe during the 1880s led to invitations to visit England and the commissioning of his oratorio Saint Ludmila for the Leeds Festival. It tells the moving and turbulent story of Ludmila’s conversion to Christianity, an important event in Bohemian history that led to her becoming Bohemia’s patron saint. Written for large forces and with a predominant part for the chorus in the tradition of Handel, Saint Ludmila is full of Dvorák’s typical warmth and melodic beauty, and stands alongside his Stabat Mater and Requiem as one of his greatest works.

GRAMMY Award-winner for Best Opera Recording, the late Kaija Saariaho's much-admired second opera, Adriana Mater, was recorded at Davies Symphony Hall in June 2023, just days after its composer's untimely passing. In its review, the New York Times wrote, "Saariaho's delicately consoling music stares down the worst of the world and says: the only way forward is grace."
