A strong argument can be made that Faces were the greatest rock 'n' roll band ever. To be fair, that argument is strongest after a couple of pints or with the stereo at an appropriately loud volume (preferably both). But even in the most academic sense, it's easy to make a case that the band purely embodied the most essential elements of what made the early '70s rock 'n' roll landscape so exciting. Utterly unconcerned with being a supergroup (the remnants of the post-Steve Marriott Small Faces combining forces with Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart from the Jeff Beck Group), and instead focused on delivering a loose, bluesy (and boozy) update on the Small Faces’ soulful psych-rock, Faces charted a back-to-basics course for other bands to follow out of the muck of the late '60s.

On the one hand, the Shadows are among the last throwbacks to a brand of utterly professional, painstakingly precise package rock & roll that existed in England before the Beatles and their contemporaries came along and substituted passion for a degree of virtuosity. On the other, the Shadows were among the biggest boosters of the electric guitar in a culture that still wasn't certain of its feelings for American-style jazz, much less rock & roll. This expanded version of the live album they cut at the Paris Olympia showcases the group's virtues and flaws about as well as anything they ever did, and may be the best way – other than picking up a handful of hits like "Apache" – for the uninitiated to discover the Shadows.

When the original line-up of Status Quo reunited for a 9-dates UK tour in March of 2013 the outpouring of approval and raw emotion from the fans was incredible. UFO, an English hard rock institution, helped pave the way for the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, with seminal acts like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Def Leppard citing the band as a significant influence. Led by vocalist Phil Mogg, who has been the group's sole constant member since its formation in 1968, UFO enjoyed commercial success in the '70s and '80s with hits like "Rock Bottom," "Lights Out," and "Doctor, Doctor." Their 1979 concert album Strangers in the Night is often cited as one of the greatest live rock albums. UFO underwent numerous lineup changes over the years – guitarist Michael Schenker, formerly of Scorpions, joined the band in 1973 and contributed significantly to their sound before leaving in 1978 – but managed to release 22 studio albums, 14 live recordings, and numerous compilations before ceasing operations in 2024.
