Saying that he "just wanted to be bored" (though, in reality, terrified to fly), book editor George Caldwell (Gene Wilder) eschews the airlines and travels from Los Angeles to Chicago aboard a train called "The Silver Streak." George meets and becomes romantically involved with Hilly Burns (Jill Clayburgh). After he witnesses the murder of Hilly's boss Professor Schreiner, a well known art historian, George is thrown off the train and is himself accused of the murder of undercover FBI agent Bob Sweet (Ned Beatty). Sweet had been tracking shady art dealer Roger Devereaux (Patrick McGoohan), who had killed Schreiner in order to take control of the "Rembrandt letters," which proved certain art sold by Devereaux had been forgeries. Devereaux further planned to replace Schreiner with a double, and thereby to discredit a book written by the professor that would have destroyed Devereaux's reputation. This plan requires killing Caldwell and Burns, the only witnesses to the crime. To survive and save Burns, Caldwell enlists the help of small-time criminal Grover Muldoon (Richard Pryor).

Erotic? Serious? Funny? Tragic? A Mystery? A Game? A Paradox? Neo-Sadism? A Detective Story?
Written and directed by the high priest of the French nouveau roman, this now looks considerably more literary than cinematic. Robbe-Grillet himself plays the focal character, the author-within-the-film, dreaming up a surreal melodrama involving a man (Trintignant) who boards the same train, during a journey through Europe: dope-pushing, gangsterism, bondage fantasies. Trintignant's cool is as unshakeable as ever, but the vague 'modernism' of the project can't conceal an underlying pomposity.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis and based on children's author Chris Van Allsburg's modern holiday classic of the same name, The Polar Express revolves around Billy (Hayden McFarland), who longs to believe in Santa Claus but finds it quite difficult to do so, what with his family's dogged insistence that all of it, from the North Pole, to the elves, to the man himself, is all just a myth. This all changes, however, on Christmas Eve, when a mysterious train visits Billy in the middle of the night, promising to take him and a group of other lucky children to the North Pole for a visit with Santa. The train's conductor (Tom Hanks) along with the other passengers help turn Billy's crisis in faith into a journey of self-discovery. A long-time fan of Van Allsburg's book, Hanks also helped produce the film.

Midnight Express is a harrowing tale of a naive American caught in a nightmare of his own making thousands of miles from his home. Billy Hayes (Brad Davis) is an American tourist visiting Turkey with his girlfriend Susan (Irene Miracle) when he's caught by customs officials trying to smuggle a large amount of hashish out of the country. The crime would normally carry a sentence of four years, but officials decide to make an example of Billy, and he draws a 30-year sentence despite the promises of his Turkish legal counsel. While Susan and Billy's father (Mike Kellin) pledge to do everything they can to speed Billy's release, in fact there's little than can be done. Billy quickly finds himself in a hellish prison that's a nightmare of filth, violence, rape, inedible food, and unspeakable health conditions.
