A long, long time ago… that’s how a fairy tale about the Swedish band which never joined the first league of fame dominated by their peers Mötley Crüe and Bon Jovi, but which certainly had their share of success back in the ‘80s, should start. And although it could have ended at the point of the group being swept by grunge/alternative wave of the early ‘90s, it seems 220 Volt are eager to write at least one more chapter of the story. Seventeen years after the release of Lethal Illusion, which most probably ended up lost in the mists of time, the Swedes come back with Walking In Starlight.

When my Ace colleagues Roger Armstrong and Peter Gibbon began combing the Stax vaults for unreleased recordings in the 1990s, they were surprised by the quality and quantity of the material. As soon as they returned to the UK they began compiling CDs from these vault goodies. A reassessment of the remaining unissued material over the last couple of years has led to many more highly agreeable Stax packages, and this month sees the release of the first-ever CD by Memphis’ underrated sweet soulsters the Newcomers. After Laughter Comes Tears: Complete Stax & Volt Singles + Rarities 1964-65 is a 2012 compilation by American R&b vocalist Wendy Rene. She released years of records but didn't have much success with it until 1993, when hip-hop producer The RZA sampled her song "After Laughter (Comes Tears)" as part of a song by his group, the Wu-Tang Clan, originally called "After The Laughter Comes Tears" but later made famous as "Tearz". Due to the songs used by The RZA, it became unofficially known as Shaolin Soul in reference to Shaolin being the nickname of the borough where they called home, Staten Island, New York. This represents songs that fans missed when they were originally released, including a few by a group she was with, The Drapels. It was released by Light In The Attic.
