Universal Music Jazz vient de rééditer une dizaine de disques du catalogue d’OWL Records, dont « Il Paciere », le premier disque qu’Aldo Romano enregistra sous son nom. Le batteur a alors une trentaine d’années, il vient de tomber sous le charme d’un jeune guitariste prometteur, Claude Barthélémy et décide d’entrer en studio avec lui. La grande majorité d’Il Paciere est constituée de morceaux enregistrés par les deux compères. Jean François Jenny-Clark vient les rejoindre sur un titre très libre, et Romano délaisse sa batterie pour accompagner à la guitare sèche Michel Portal sur deux plages.

Une habitude, presque un rite. C'est la rencontre avec un musicien, qui détermine mon désir d'un album. Vincent Llê Quang, entendu pendant une jam, a déclenché cette nouvelle aventure. Ce concert au Triton, je l'ai voulu complètement ouvert, sans partition, comme un chemin sans repère, seulement l'inspiration du moment. Du "free jazz"? oui, enfin. Je dirais plutôt de l'improvisation totale. Un art aujourd'hui souvent oublié, que nous avons beaucoup pratiqué avec l'indispensable Henri Texier, a différentes périodes de notre parcours. "Liberi Sumus" m'a redonne l'envie d'explorer, encore, une forme de musique qui demande une écoute particulière entre les musiciens, et un public ouvert à la prise de risque que cela implique. At 18 tracks, this is a lot of Aldo Nova, especially since Nova is pretty much the province of early-'80s hard rock fetishists. Still, there's a reason why Nova has fans, and it's because his music was trippier and stranger than that of his peers, whether it was Billy Squier or Accept. As such, it has dated a little bit, but in a good way, since this has more character than a lot of early-'80s arena metal. That doesn't mean that this will satisfy listeners just looking for "Fantasy," but for those who like to dig a little deeper into this era, this is definitely worth a spin.
