For his third Criss Cross album, pianist Misha Tsiganov presents a nine-tune program of four original compositions and kaleidoscopic arrangements of two Wayne Shorter classics, two Great American Songbook standards, and a Russian folk song. As on Artistry of the Standard Criss 1367) and Spring Feelings (Criss 1384), the St. Petersburg native – a U.S resident since 1993 – teams with trumpeter Alex Sipiagin and tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake, both leaders of multiple Criss Cross dates and internationally renowned practitioners of their respective instruments. Joining Tsiganov for the first time on Playing with the Wind are bassist Matt Brewer (Mythology, Criss 1373, and Unspoken, Criss 1390) and drummer Dan Weiss, who apply their virtuosic chops to Tsiganov's elegant charts with an open, poetic attitude.

The sky is well within reach when trumpet player extraordinaire Alex Sipiagin sets his sights on the summit and heads off upward in an Ascent to the Blues for his second release on Posi-Tone Records. The session features the focused wizardry of Sipiagin’s incisive technique, gripping tonality and hard hitting melodicism are countered cleverly against the curvature of contributions from Diego Rivera on tenor saxophone, the cool complexities of Art Hirahara on piano, the steady underpinnings of Boris Kozlov on bass, and the bombastic metrics of Rudy Royston on drums and percussion. While the album program remains decidedly straight forward and rooted in the blues throughout, the music is also elegantly lyrical and brilliantly evocative of a truly modern jazz sensibility. With a flawless combination of effortless mastery and brilliant performances, Sipiagin's “Ascent to the Blues" reaches steadily upward toward new heights and provides a clear pathway of inspirational bright moments for jazz fans everywhere to joyfully ascend again and again.

Russian-born trumpeter Alex Sipiagin's tenth recording as a leader apart from his chores with the Mingus Big Band gives homage to his first and greatest influence, Woody Shaw. On this split program of originals and selections from Shaw's repertoire, Sipiagin plays a more basic brass horn than did his highly advanced, harmonically futuristic idol, but there's an added wrinkle to this program that Shaw never really explored. Electric guitarist Adam Rogers is along for the ride, drastically morphing these tunes to a fusion style that Shaw only touched upon - refer to the early-'70s album Blackstone Legacy. In sparser frameworks, Sipiagin and this piano-less quartet bring new meaning to Shaw's influential music, which has stood the test of time for some four decades…

After the release of the albumD "what if" last year, there was talk of an ensemble like an organism, an exceptional album and the perfect playing of the leader. Even back then, pianist Rainer Böhm had dispensed with the wind section for three compositions during the dramaturgically cleverly linked, highly emotional sextet events, which were balanced like a dream between improvisation and composition, in order to have room for trio pieces with double bassist Arne Huber and drummer Jonas Burgwinkel.

Allan Harris is a very experienced vocalist with an excellent reputation. Sometimes he is even called the "jazz vocal king of New York", and the Miami Herald newspaper finds in his voice "the warmth of Tony Bennett, the sharpness and sense of rhythm of Sinatra and the sly elegance of Nat King Cole." Harris's popularity rose even further during the days of the pandemic lockdown, when every Tuesday he streamed live concerts under the title Harlem After Dark from his own apartment on the Web every Tuesday. Allan has amassed an impressive discography of fourteen albums over the years, the latest being Kate's Soulfood (2021). But there were no new live albums in this collection for thirteen years. This streak was interrupted by the release of Live at Blue Llama.

"Missing Element - Live at Upstairs" is the first effort by the Alex Francoeur as a leader. Alex has composed all of the music, with the exception of one jazz standard, ''I Hear a Rhapsody''. The goal of this record was to capture the energy and spirit of live jazz music; exciting, unpredictable and daring. His quintet, comprised of Chris Edmondson on alto saxophone, Gentiane MG on piano, Levi Dover on bass and Louis-Vincent Hamel on drums, do justice to this objective in brilliant fashion, with each of their individual voices shining through while conserving a concise group sound.
