Alexander Gadjiev’s album Legends takes listeners on a journey through the timeless legends and stories hidden within music, revealing its power to conjure entire worlds. In Debussy’s La cathédrale engloutie, ghostly bells rise from a submerged cathedral, bringing a Breton myth to life. Liszt’s Funérailles rages with thunderous chords, evoking a battle against mortality, whilst Musorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition unfolds a vivid tapestry of Slavic folklore and European scenes. Prokofiev’s Légende tells an enchanted tale of light and shadow, and Scriabin’s Sonata No. 9 (Black Mass) immerses us in an eerie, otherworldly soundscape. Franck’s Prélude, Fugue et Variation offers a sublime reflection on the soul’s journey, while Bach-Siloti’s Prelude in B minor resonates like a timeless, universal hymn. The Italian-Slovenian pianist has designed this programme to offer listeners a profound and mythical experience.

“Romanticism” is characterized by crossing all kinds of boundaries. Usually, the titles of compositions give us insight into how their creators were inspired by literature, landscapes or works of art. But mere titles do not exhaust the phenomenon of crossing borders the least. Many artists have multiple talents. Franz Liszt not only composed, but was also an outstanding piano virtuoso.

With this new volume, Alexandre Melnikov has chosen to delve into three distinct periods of the composer’s career, ranging from the dazzling though seldom-heard No. 4 to the magisterial No. 9. In between those two, the sonata no. 7 once again evokes the troubled atmosphere characteristic of the three so-called ‘war sonatas’. Sviatoslav Richter claimed to have learned the piece in a mere four days.

Chandos’s previous Prokofiev series, recorded in the 80s with Neëme Järvi and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, is still probably the most recommendable complete cycle available. Chandos now seem to feel the need to start again, the reason possibly being that they are now using ‘authentically’ all-Russian forces. Whatever the company’s motivation (or if indeed it is to be a complete cycle), the results are impressively powerful, and the coupling stimulating and generous.

This new recording (recorded in 2012) brings together two great, but altogether different 20th century Cello Sonatas from Russia: the gorgeous and deeply romantic cello sonata by Rachmaninoff, of near‐symphonic proportions, and the cello sonata by Prokofiev, a hybrid piece of his later period, a fascinating mixture of the romantic, the grotesque and the introspective side of the multi-faceted composer.

Back before there were recordings, performance history was only as old as the oldest memory, and thus it was not only possible but inevitable that every generation would reinterpret every piece. But now in this the golden age of recorded music, when pretty much everything that's ever been recorded is available somewhere in the world, performance history has become a nightmare from which contemporary performers will never awaken. No matter how powerfully argued and compellingly played a recorded performance is, it will inevitably be compared with the great recorded performances of the past. And in that comparison, all too often the contemporary performance will be found wanting.

The Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev was one of the giants of 20th century music. Reference Recordings is proud to present the Utah Symphony conducted by Thierry Fischer, in grand new performances of "Alexander Nevsky" and the "Lieutenant Kijé Suite", two of his most brilliant and dramatic musical works. The music of Lieutenant Kijé was originally written as the score to the film of the same name, released in March 1934. Prokofiev soon adapted it into the five-movement Lieutenant Kijé Suite, first performed in December 1934, and which quickly became a favorite in the international concert repertoire. Then, in 1938, Prokofiev collaborated with film director Eisenstein to create the score for the film Alexander Nevsky. He later adapted much of his score into the large-scale cantata for mezzo-soprano, orchestra and chorus featured on this recording.
