Alexandre Shafran

Young Ukrainian pianist Tetiana Shafran is the First Prize Winner of the 2019 Olga Kern Competition. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Tetiana Shafran started playing piano at the age of 3. She graduated from the Lysenko Special Music School and the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine where she studied with Andriy Vasin and the Oxana Yablonskaya Piano Academy where she studied with Professor Yablonskaya. Tetiana is the prize-winner of about 25 International piano competitions: For her debut album on the Steinway & Sons label, she performs a beguiling program of music by Chopin, Ravel, and Mikhail Pletnev's brilliant arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty.

A diverse composer who works in a variety of film genres, he emerged in the mid-'80s, developing an extensive resumé in his native France before coming to the attention of Hollywood. That happened with his at-once gorgeous and fanciful score for the English-language film The Girl with the Pearl Earring in 2003. He earned his first of many Academy Award nominations for 2006's The Queen. Often valued for his elegant whimsicality, Desplat joined the Twilight Saga in 2009 and the Harry Potter franchise in 2010 before taking home Oscar statuettes for Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) and Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water (2017). He received additional elite award nods for the 2019 version of Little Women and for 2020's The Midnight Sky.

Sergey Prokofiev was so musically precocious that no less a figure than Reinhold Gliere was employed as his live-in tutor. Gliere’s lessons proved to be both rigorous and inspiring and the young Prokofiev wrote a delightful sequence of works for the piano. Revealing an increasing command of harmony, these miniatures show why he was, at the age of thirteen, the youngest ever student to be enrolled at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire. ‘Old Grandmother’s Tales, Op. 31,’ written in New York in 1918 is suffused with nostalgia, while the ‘Six Pieces, Op. 52,’ are vivid arrangements of some of his earlier works.
