What challenges does a composer of the 21st century face when tackling the piano? One could think that its musical possibilities have almost been depleted: on the one hand, György Ligeti’s Etudes (1985–2001) probably stand as the fin-de-siècle pianistic milestone; on the other hand, following in a way Henry Cowell’s pioneering experiments on the piano, both John Cage’s preparations and Helmut Lachenmann’s extended techniques epitomize a deconstruction of the piano’s normalized uses. Some of their followers have however overexploited these novel paths, paradoxically rendering several radical achievements cliché. Aesthetic apriorisms still prevail and composers are often urged to take ideological sides, but Ramon Lazkano belongs to those who, since the nineties, have deftly navigated between tradition and experimentation.

Italian pianist Alfonso Soldano presents solo piano works by his 20th-century compatriot Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Primarily known for his guitar compositions and his Hollywood film scores, Castelnuovo-Tedesco also composed a rich body of piano pieces primarily in a lyrical and lush vein, though there are hints of harmonically adventurous modernism as can be heard in the charming Sonatina zoologica, whose movements are named after small creatures. Soldano performs all of these works, some of which are world premiere recordings, with virtuosity and an admirable intensity.

Joachim Kühn - Allegro Vivace: Piano Works I (2005). Just judged by its repertoire, this is certainly an impressive solo piano date. Joachim Kühn performs works by François Couperin (a mass from 1690), Bach, Mozart, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman in addition to three of his own originals. Although the mixture of classical and jazz pieces might seem illogical, Kühn's subtle improvising on the classical compositions and his ability to create melodies in his improvising on the jazz tunes give this date an evolution that somehow works. Kühn has always had impressive technique and a healthy musical curiosity. Both serve him well, along with his imagination, on this intriguing and successful outing…

The music of Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov is a unique and delicate tapestry of dramatic and emotional textures, that freely alludes to the entire history of music. "I do not write new music. My music is a response to and an echo of what already exists," Silvestrov has said. Beginning his creative career in the radical Soviet Avant-Garde, Silvestrov demonstrated an almost painful sensitivity to the intimacy that music can create between performer and listener. Silvestrov would later refute his modernist roots, saying “the most important lesson of the Avant-Garde is to be free of all conceived ideas, particularly those of the Avant-Garde” and began composing a series of works entitled “Postludium” that initiated the elegiac, poetic and highly personal relationship with silence which has come to characterize his most recent music. Haenssler Classic is proud to present pianist Jenny Lin in the World Premiere Recording of Silvestrov’s “Three Postludes”, a work composed especially for her.

For many years the Busoni student Selim Palmgren was the most frequently performed Finnish composer after Sibelius. With a portfolio of nearly 400 piano works, his contribution to the prestige of the Nordic repertoire was significant both in scope and creative artistry. This fifth volume of Palmgrens complete solo piano music explores oriental moods in Exotic March, Op. 46, and includes two of his best-known and most beautiful pieces, Aftonrster, Op. 47, No. 1 (Evening Whispers) and the winter magic of Snflingor, Op. 57, No. 2 (Snowflakes). The Sonatine in F major, Op. 93 marked Palmgrens return to composition after the death of his wife five years earlier and enshrines nostalgia whilst hinting at neo-Classicism.

His wide-ranging music for piano was performed and recorded by some of the greatest artists of the day. This third volume in the first complete cycle of Palmgren’s piano music on disc includes a varied cross-section of works written over a 50-year period. It includes the youthful Lyriskt intermezzo, Op. 8, romantic miniatures of great charm – as well as one of his greatest achievements, the atmospheric suite Kevät (‘Spring’), in which impressionist elements fuse with rich Finnish folk melody.
