A hip hootenanny from vibist Terry Gibbs – hardly the folksy set you might guess from the title, and instead a lively batch of small combo tunes that grooves better than most of Gibbs' work from the 60s! Most tracks are of traditional origin – folk tunes, if you will – but the jazz inflections of the group quickly takes them bast their roots, using the core melodies mostly as a framework for improvisation – featuring great vibes from Gibbs, plus tenor and flute from Al Epstein, guitar from Jimmy Raney, and piano from Alicir McLeod. Terry's vibes are nice and bold, and titles include "Michael", "Joshua", "John Henry", "Greensleeves", "Tom Dooley", and "Sam Hall".

Son of famed vibist Terry Gibbs, drummer Gerry teams up to record this debut of the second incarnation of The Gerry Gibbs Thrasher Band with 5 multi-talented instrumentalist from all over the state of Texas to create the Gerry Gibbs Thrasher Band 2 ,which played and toured together for 5 years.The 6 musicians of the”Thrasher Band” play 27 instruments between them on this date. Instruments include, Soprano, Alto, Tenor & Baritone Saxophones,Piccolo, Flute, Alto Flute, Bass Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Acoustic & Electric Guitars, Vibraphone, Glockenspiel, Acoustic Piano, Mini Moog, Melodica, Harmonica, Trumpet, Acoustic Bass, Drums, Balifone, Kalimba, Recorder, Wood Flute, Gongs, Vocals, & Misc. Percussion.After 5 years the band separated with each member to go on to tour and join the bands of people like Christian McBride, Poncho Sanchez, Billy Childs, Strunz & Farrar and others!

In 2010 Universal Japan reissued a series of Impulse! classic jazz records on limited-edition CD. 20bit K2 mastering. One of the most accomplished jazz vibraphonists, Terry Gibbs made one of his best small group recordings for Impulse! in 1964. With Kenny Burrell and the strong rhythm section consisting of Sam Jones and Louis Hayes who were at the time working for Cannonball Adderley, Gibbs turns in a superb performance that is bluesy, swinging and modern!

Following the appetizer of the two 12" singles "Trinidad (Disco Mix)" [EM1128TEP] and "J'Ouvert" [EM1129TEP], we now serve up the main dish, the fine 1977 album Steel Funk by John Gibbs and the Unlimited Sound of Steel Orchestra, a new addition to our 'EM Steel Pan Series'.
