Inspired by the image of a violin melody ‘flying off’, Chinese-American composer Bright Sheng’s virtuosic three-movement concerto Let Fly interweaves Chinese and Western classical elements. Vivid legends of astrological animals inform Zodiac Tales, a tour de force concerto for orchestra. Reflecting the city of Suzhou’s ancient, continuous cultural heritage, traditional nostalgia fuses with contemporary rhythms in the exciting Suzhou Overture. These works are featured here in their world premiere recordings.

The second Deutsche Grammophon release “Gateways” by the newly signed Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and Long Yu features Chinese and Russian works. This is the first in a series of SSO albums featuring works by important Chinese composers This 2019 release celebrates the orchestra’s 140th anniversary – it is China’s oldest orchestra – and coincides with a major US and European tour with Long Yu. Star soloist Maxim Vengerov is the dedicatee and first performer of Qigang Chen’s violin concerto.

College returns with its third full length album, a rich, glowing and nostalgic synth-based offering reminiscent of previous works heard in ‘A Real Hero’ (Drive Soundtrack), but at the same time exploring a unique and conceptual world, ‘Shanghai’, giving College’s textural and atmospherical works a brand new dimension.

Bright Sheng is a Chinese-American composer, pianist, music teacher and conductor born on December 6, 1955 in Shanghai, China. Before moving to the United States in 1982, he studied the piano at the age of four from his mother. He graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory and went on to continue his education at Queens College and Columbia University. In 1995, he became a part of the faculty at the University of Michigan. Sheng has since then earned many honors for his music and compositions.

This collection returns us to a time when the city of shanghai was a mecca of international sophistication and daring, and U.S. swing and jazz musicians of the classic era found a home amid the city's nightlife, which they shared with the best-known Chinese singers of the period. These discs mix great western musicians like Coleman Hawkins and Ella Fitzgerald (and some western artists like Sammy Kaye who were perhaps more popular than great) with Chinese cabaret singers who had crossover appeal for western ears.
