על פי זיכרונותיו של עמוס עוז מילדותו בירושלים בשנים שלפני הקמת המדינה. לאריה אביו, היו תקוות זהירות לגבי העתיד, אבל פניה אמו, רצתה הרבה יותר. אחרי ששרדו את אימת המלחמה והבריחה מאירופה, הגיעו חיי היומיום שהכבידו קשות על נפשה, כדי להתעודד ולבדר את עמוס בן העשר, המציאה סיפורים על הרפתקאות מסעירות, עמוס הוקסם כשקראה לו שירה והסבירה לו פירושן של מילים ושפות, באופן שישפיע על כתיבתו לכל חייו. כשמדינת ישראל זכתה לעצמאות, והדבר לא הוביל לתחושת החיות המחודשת שפניה ציפתה לה, היא הלכה ושקעה בבדידות ועצב. בלי יכולת לעזור לה, עמוס נאלץ להיפרד ממנה מוקדם מדי. בזמן שהוא חוזה בלידתה של המדינה, עליו להתמודד עם חייו החדשים שלו עצמו.
