Modern Applied Statistics with S

Modern Applied Statistics with S by W. N. Venables , B. D. Ripley
English | PDF (True) | 2002 | 501 Pages | ISBN : 0387954570 | 41.3 MB

S is a powerful environment for the statistical and graphical analysis of data. It provides the tools to implement many statistical ideas that have been made possible by the widespread availability of workstations having good graphics and computational capabilities. This book is a guide to using S environments to perform statistical analyses and provides both an introduction to the use of S and a course in modern statistical methods. Implementations of S are available commercially in S-PLUS(R) workstations and as the Open Source R for a wide range of computer systems. The aim of this book is to show how to use S as a powerful and graphical data analysis system. Readers are assumed to have a basic grounding in statistics, and so the book is intended for would-be users of S-PLUS or R and both students and researchers using statistics. Throughout, the emphasis is on presenting practical problems and full analyses of real data sets. Many of the methods discussed are state of the art approaches to topics such as linear, nonlinear and smooth regression models, tree-based methods, multivariate analysis, pattern recognition, survival analysis, time series and spatial statistics. Throughout modern techniques such as robust methods, non-parametric smoothing and bootstrapping are used where appropriate. This fourth edition is intended for users of S-PLUS 6.0 or R 1.5.0 or later. A substantial change from the third edition is updating for the current versions of S-PLUS and adding coverage of R. The introductory material has been rewritten to emphasis the import, export and manipulation of data. Increased computational power allows even more computer-intensive methods to be used, and methods such as GLMMs

This third edition is intended for users of S-PLUS 4.5, 5.0 or later, although S-PLUS 3.3/4 are also considered. The major change from the second edition is coverage of the current versions of S-PLUS. The material has been extensively rewritten using new examples and the latest computationally-intensive methods. Volume 2: S programming, which is in preparation, will provide an in-depth guide for those writing software in the S language.

This second edition is intended for users of S-PLUS 3.3, 4.0, or later. It covers the recent developments in graphics and new statistical functionality, including bootstraping, mixed effects, linear and non-linear models, factor analysis, and regression with autocorrelated errors. The material on S-PLUS programming has been re-written to explain the full story behind the object-oriented programming features. The authors have written several software libraries which enhance S-PLUS; these and all the datasets used are available on the Internet in versions for Windows and UNIX.

The Lebesgue-Stieltjes Integral: A Practical Introduction  eBooks & eLearning

The Lebesgue-Stieltjes Integral: A Practical Introduction

The Lebesgue-Stieltjes Integral: A Practical Introduction by M. Carter , B. Brunt
English | PDF (True) | 2000 | 236 Pages | ISBN : 0387950125 | 15.1 MB

Mathematics students generally meet the Riemann integral early in their undergraduate studies, then at advanced undergraduate or graduate level they receive a course on measure and integration dealing with the Lebesgue theory. However, those whose interests lie more in the direction of applied mathematics will in all probability find themselves needing to use the Lebesgue or Lebesgue-Stieltjes Integral without having the necessary theoretical background. It is to such readers that this book is addressed. The authors aim to introduce the Lebesgue-Stieltjes integral on the real line in a natural way as an extension of the Riemann integral. They have tried to make the treatment as practical as possible. The evaluation of Lebesgue-Stieltjes integrals is discussed in detail, as are the key theorems of integral calculus as well as the standard convergence theorems. The book then concludes with a brief discussion of multivariate integrals and surveys ok L^p spaces and some applications. Exercises, which extend and illustrate the theory, and provide practice in techniques, are included. Michael Carter and Bruce van Brunt are senior lecturers in mathematics at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand. Michael Carter obtained his Ph.D. at Massey University in 1976. He has research interests in control theory and differential equations, and has many years of experience in teaching analysis.

An Introduction to Multivariable Analysis from Vector to Manifold  eBooks & eLearning

An Introduction to Multivariable Analysis from Vector to Manifold

An Introduction to Multivariable Analysis from Vector to Manifold by Piotr Mikusiński , Michael D. Taylor
English | PDF | 2002 | 300 Pages | ISBN : 081764234X | 21 MB

Multivariable analysis is an important subject for mathematicians, both pure and applied. Apart from mathematicians, we expect that physicists, mechanical engi neers, electrical engineers, systems engineers, mathematical biologists, mathemati cal economists, and statisticians engaged in multivariate analysis will find this book extremely useful. The material presented in this work is fundamental for studies in differential geometry and for analysis in N dimensions and on manifolds. It is also of interest to anyone working in the areas of general relativity, dynamical systems, fluid mechanics, electromagnetic phenomena, plasma dynamics, control theory, and optimization, to name only several. An earlier work entitled An Introduction to Analysis: from Number to Integral by Jan and Piotr Mikusinski was devoted to analyzing functions of a single variable. As indicated by the title, this present book concentrates on multivariable analysis and is completely self-contained. Our motivation and approach to this useful subject are discussed below. A careful study of analysis is difficult enough for the average student; that of multi variable analysis is an even greater challenge. Somehow the intuitions that served so well in dimension I grow weak, even useless, as one moves into the alien territory of dimension N. Worse yet, the very useful machinery of differential forms on manifolds presents particular difficulties; as one reviewer noted, it seems as though the more precisely one presents this machinery, the harder it is to understand.
