Since Bryn Terfel’s home has always been in North Wales, it may seem strange that he travelled to the Rocky Mountains in the American West to make an album called Homeward Bound. But Terfel has found a true sense of belonging in Salt Lake City, Utah, where the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is based. The 360-voice ensemble provides the rich and evocative backdrops for Terfel’s ringing bass-baritone on this new set of recordings, which spans material ranging from British and American folk and popular songs to hymns, spirituals and classical pieces. Enhancing their combined musical artistry is the fact that choir and star soloist are united by a surprising amount of shared history.

Bryn Terfel's first studio album in over five years featuring wildly romantic "Sea Songs". Shanties and songs about the sea and seafaring in a folky guise such as "Wellerman", "Bold Riley", "Drunken Sailor" or "Sloop John B", with guests such as Sting ("Green Willow Tree"), Simon Keenlyside and the enchanting Welsh folk group Calan, and the a capella choir "Fisherman's Friends".

Terfel says, “It’s always a joy to be back in the recording studio, especially to record some of my favourite concert repertoire. Songs and duets, some humorous encores that I just adore to sing, and was champing at the bit to record. And how lucky I am to share the album with some incredible artists, and to record at the amazing, iconic Abbey Road. All in all, as in The Fields of Athenry, dreams and songs to sing.”

Bryn Terfel Jones was born in Pant Glas, Caernarfonshire, Wales, the son of a farmer.

The two eldest children of the music-loving banker Abraham Mendelssohn and his wife Lea were highly musical: Fanny, born in late 1805, and her brother Felix, who was three and a half years her junior. The lucky children enjoyed a carefree youth, in which music played a central role. While Felix became a famous composer and conductor, Fanny, according to the dictates of the time, had to subordinate her own composing talents to a role as wife and mother.

Following their acclaimed Schumann recording, tenor Mark Padmore and fortepiano phenomenon Kristian Bezuidenhout join forces again for this varied and appealing lieder recital of songs by Haydn, 'An die ferne Geliebte' Op.98 by Beethoven, and the Masonic Cantata K.619 by Mozart.

The Japanese pianist and DG signing Nobuyuki Tsujii presents Beethoven's formidable 'Hammerklavier Sonata', renowned for its dual technical und intellectual challenges, combined with the lyricism of Liszt's affectionate transcription of Beethoven's 'An die ferne Geliebte, Op. 98 ('To the Distant Beloved'').
