Whether macabre (Saint-Saëns), diabolical (Liszt), sad (Vecsey), transcendent (Ljapunov), Russian, Italian or French, these "voltiges" stand for absolute virtuosity. The artist Tristan Pfaff does not just string together one high-wire act, but several at once. He plays the selected pieces by Khachaturian, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and many others in arrangements of great virtuoso predecessors: György Cziffra, Mikhail Pletnyov, Vladimir Horowitz and others. What sounds under the hands of the congenial pianist Tristan Pfaff amazes the listener in disbelief.

Beethoven Piano Concertos are amongst the most often performed and recorded works in the repertoire. However, the arrangement for string orchestra by Vincenz Lachner is a surprisingly rare find in recording history, even more so on period instruments.

The composer Friedrich Gernsheim, who was highly respected during his lifetime, is largely unknown today. Yet, especially in his choral compositions, he broke away from traditional ideas of form at an early stage and was thus ahead of many of his contemporaries. With this recording, Tristan Meister and Vox Quadrata have set themselves the goal of bringing the forgotten choral works of the Jewish composer back into the public consciousness.

On Igor Levit’s double album “Tristan” – which will be released on Sony Classical on September 9, 2022 - the pianist explores nocturnal themes of love and death, fear, ecstasy, loneliness & redemption in the music of Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt, Gustav Mahler & Hans Werner Henze. It includes Levit’s first concerto recording with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under Franz Welser-Möst with the album’s central work Henze’s “Tristan” for piano, electronic tapes and orchestra.
