Andrés Segovia Torres, 1st Marquis of Salobreña[a] (21 February 1893 – 2 June 1987) was a virtuoso Spanish classical guitarist from Linares, Spain. Many professional classical guitarists today were students of Segovia, or students of his students. Segovia's contribution to the modern-romantic repertoire not only included commissions but also his own transcriptions of classical or baroque works. He is remembered for his expressive performances: his wide palette of tone, and his distinctive musical personality, phrasing and style.

Guitarist Andrés Segovia did much to develop the classical guitar as it exists today, and he was almost unique among the great virtuosos of classical music in being self-taught. He commissioned a great deal of music that expanded the guitar repertory, transcribed music for the guitar, and was an influential educator to whom many of today's classical guitarists can trace their musical lineages. Segovia was born on February 21, 1893, in Linares, in southern Spain's Andalucía region. He was raised by an aunt and uncle who recognized his talent and signed him up for violin lessons.

Award-winning Spanish guitarist Roberto Moronn Pérez follows successful albums featuring Spanish and French composers with this recording of works from the Andrés Segovia Archive showcasing the best compositions from multiple countries. The unique project started in May 2001 when a collection of pieces was recovered at Segovia’s home in Spain. These works, by composers from eight countries, were dedicated to Segovia or commissioned by him and subsequently published as the Segovia Archive Series.

The concept of this album is inspired by two sources: the works are based on the harmonic pattern of “La Follia”, a characteristic Spanish Dance, and, secondly, the guitar that belonged to Andrés Segovia and was built in 1924 by the famous luthier Santos Hernández, and donated by the maestro to the Victor Espinos Music Library in Madrid. Segovia is known to have played the instrument extensively, on several world tours.
