NERD are not only back, for the first time since 2010’s Nothing album, then, but relevant – political, even, in marked contrast to their slinkier incarnations. You get the impression that, however huge a hit Happy was for Williams, there was a desire for him to make some beats that could in no way soundtrack a children’s film. There is a strong Yolo bent, redolent of Pharrell’s Skateboard P days, to No_One Ever Really Dies. One track, Don’t Don’t Do It!, even breaks into something like ska. This is a brash, busy party record with its eyes wide open, in which the NERD brand is thoroughly refreshed.

Kamasi Washington releases his new album, Fearless Movement, via Young. Washington calls Fearless Movement his dance album. “It’s not literal,” Washington says. “Dance is movement and expression, and in a way it’s the same thing as music—expressing your spirit through your body. That’s what this album is pushing.” Dance as an embodied form of expression signals a shift in focus for Washington. Where previous albums dealt with cosmic ideas and existential concepts, Fearless Movement focuses in on the everyday, an exploration of life on earth. This change in scope is due in large part to the birth of Washington’s first child a few years ago.

Anderson .Paak has announced a new album, Ventura. The follow-up to last year’s Oxnard is due out April 12 via Aftermath, and was recorded around the same time as that album, according to a press release. He’s also announced a new tour (titled the Best Teef In the Game Tour) with his band, the Free Nationals. There are some heavy hitters among the opening artists as well: Thundercat will join him for all the shows, while Mac DeMarco, Earl Sweatshirt, Noname, and Jessie Reyez are slated to join Anderson on select dates.
