The well-known German hammer piano specialist Tobias Koch has long been intensively engaged with the three great Sonatas from Schubert's year of death in 1828, which he regards in many respects as "music for the future". Now, the artist has decided to document his idiosyncratic and sophisticated Interpretation of these sonatas, which he sees as a cycle that belongs together, on CD.

After living in Denmark and collaborating with Danes for years, one could call Tobias Wiklund more than a little Danish. Still, he has always been a Swede, remaining true to his northern Scandinavian roots of nature and nurture and having recently returned to his homeland of Sweden. And while Wiklund is a celebrated trumpet player, he chooses to explore his original music on cornet. As an artist, he stands outas a fabulous instrumentalist and an innovative composer.

Tobias Picker, hailed as “a genuine creator” by The New Yorker, has written extensively for the stage and for symphonic forces, and these two approaches are represented in this album. The Encantadas (an older name for the Galápagos Islands) derives from a novella by Herman Melville. Picker has set it as a melodrama, exploring the enchanted isles in all their quietly menacing and spectacular beauty. In a radical new form, Picker’s Opera Without Words is set to a libretto by Irene Dische that has now been removed, allowing the music alone to bear the expressive richness and intensity of this “secret opera.”
