“It can be asserted without hesitation that every member of a first-class orchestra deserves to be called an ‘artist’,” Arthur Nikisch once wrote. With this credo, the chief conductor of what at that time was called the Berliner Philharmonisches Orchester played an important role in allowing the musicians to conceive of themselves as soloists — something that remains one of the unmistakable qualities of the Berliner Philharmoniker to this day.

“The English horn needs a soft, round vibrato… We are among those who can move people to tears,” says Dominik Wollenweber about his instrument. Let us not be misled by the humble conduct, and the absence of laudatory articles and glossy photographs. Wollenweber is one of the world’s finest cor anglais players. Claudio Abbado has even labelled him the “best player of all time”.

The Berliner Philharmoniker enjoy a productive partnership with many of these esteemed companions – with some, even a friendship.

Perhaps this disc needs no explanation. Henri Dutilleux's Sur le même accord is a short piece for violin and orchestra that is, as the title suggests, based on one "chord", which Mutter rather more simply describes as an 'aria' (the piece's subtitle is 'Nocturne'). Indeed there is much lyrical writing that displays Mutter's expressive warmth that underpins this mysterious and yet illuminative work. Another Nocturne comes in the shape of Bartók's Concerto for Violin no. 2, but here it is a slightly uneasy one. The scherzoid interruption is magnificently light, the ending glorious. Mutter and Ozawa follow the twists and turns of the finale like a shadow, making clear in the process the correspondences with the Scherzando of the second movement. Finally, Stravinsky's Concerto for Violin commands a meticulous control, clarity of vision, and an attention-grabbing conviction that Mutter manages with sensitivity and nuance sufficient to maintain a masterstroke to the end.

In May of 2015, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter gave a truly unique concert: rather than standing on stage in one of the world’s renowned well-tempered grand concert halls, she spent two evenings playing in a tiny graffiti-scrawled nightclub in Berlin. Recorded in front of a standing-room only audience, this new release includes popular works by Bach, Copland, Gershwin, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi and many more. Mutter is joined by Mahan Esfahani, Lambert Orkis and the Mutter Virtuosi.
