Finnish bassist Antti Lötjönen returns in February 2023 with his second Quintet East album on We Jazz Records. With Verneri Pohjola on trumpet, Mikko Innanen and Jussi Kannaste on saxes, and Joonas Riippa on drums, Quintet East is a hard-hitting ensemble of Helsinki scene A-listers. The new release sees the quintet work with Lötjönen’s inspired new music with remarkable spirit, spreading out on a quest for new sounds and ideas, and returning to base with a fresh batch of acoustic creative music, wild to the bone even when sounding completely in control.
This is a strikingly good disc, notable as once for the full-bodied, golden tone of the piano (superbly recorded) and Siirala's ability to hold both long movements and large structures together with playing of refined musicality.
This new album release by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Hannu Lintu presents a new contemporary voice within Finlands contemporary music scene: Antti Auvinen. This album includes three recent orchestral works by the composer marked by highly pressurised and explosive rhythms and sounds. The premieres of Antti Auvinens (b. 1974) Junker Twist (2015) and Himmel Punk (2016) in the mid-2010s electrified the scene of Finlands contemporary music: music critics felt that a new major voice in the countrys music scene had been born. Auvinens works are often thematically connected to events in the surrounding society.
Holy smokes, what a fantastic collection of contemporary pirate music! Once again, Antti Martikainen has proven to us all that instrumental songs have their rightful place in modern day music. Bravo, here here, sit back and relax, and enjoy the ride.
Finnish Accordion Concertos contains the works of three Finnish composers for accordion. The album opens with Vyöry (2021), composed by Minna Leinonen (b. 1977), one of the rising names of her generation, performed by accordion artist and pedagogue Antti Leinonen as soloist of KPKO. The piece was premiered with the same force in 2022, and the composer says that during the composition process, "worldwide changes swept through society", and in the piece you can hear "accelerating eruptions, flows and culminations".
