En 1995, la Ville de Luxembourg fait bâtir une salle de concert sur le plateau du Kirchberg, le nouveau quartier des banques et des institutions européennes. L'architecte français Christian de Portzamparc, secondé admirablement par l'acousticien Xu Yaying, fait de ce lieu son grand instrument de musique. De forme elliptique, la Philharmonie abrite le grand auditorium tel un joyau dans son écrin.

Aux environs de 1560, à Maser, les frères Barbaro, une des plus grandes familles de Venise, demandent à l'architecte Andrea Palladio de leur construire une maison de campagne et au peintre Véronèse d'en décorer les murs. Ancien tailleur de pierre, l'architecte invente un nouveau type de résidence rurale, moitié palais, moitié ferme. La villa palladienne est une révolution. Pour la première fois, la grande architecture se préoccupe de fonctions et d'habitat, cherchant à lier le beau et l'utile, la colonne de temple et la grange…

En 1937, Mussolini décide de lancer, sur les terres agricoles situées entre Rome et la mer, un immense chantier d'un nouveau quartier situé au sud de Rome, en vue de l’exposition universelle. Dénommée les Olympiades de la civilisation, l’exposition doit se tenir dans la capitale italienne en 1942, année qui marque le vingtième anniversaire de la Marche sur Rome. Ce projet, appelé E.42, est confié au célèbre architecte du régime, Marcello Piacentini. Les travaux commencent en 1938…
