Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks has made several stabs at a solo career since 1978, writing and recording in various styles and occasionally under different group names. However, none of his attempts have been very commercially successful, a sore point for the man many deem responsible for a large portion of the Genesis sound…

Marking an incredible 30 years since his first holiday album Christmas Present, Rick Braun’s new seasonal recording It’s Christmas is a high spirited, genre-transcendent collection that finds him exploring an expansive range of styles, starting with the opening, Steely Dan meets the Saturday Night Live horns jam band explosion of “Deck those Halls” and including what he calls the “Disney Fireworks” crescendo on “Do You Hear The Angels” (a colorful, clever mood swinging mashup of “Joy to the World,” “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “Angels We Have Heard On High” and “O Come All Ye Faithful”). Along the way, he includes straight ahead jazz trio takes on Mel Torme’s timeless “The Christmas Song” and “The Santa Clause,” a clever, swinging spin on “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” which begins with Braun whistling. Other highlights include the dynamic five-piece Pinot Noir Brass (Dickson, Braun, trumpeter Jeff Bunnell, trombonist Nick Lane and tuba player Doug Tornquist) on “God Rest Ye Merry Gents”; and two Braun originals, the lush, intimate, string caressed “Christmas Eve Waltz” (featuring Braun self-duetting on flugelhorn and piano) and the title track “It’s Christmas,” a charming, romantic vocal tune. Braun’s previous holiday recordings include appearing on and producing A Peter White Christmas (2007); the vocal/big band themed Swingin’ In The Snow (2012); and the traditional Pinot Noir Brass Christmas (2023), featuring Braun and four veteran horn player friends.

This collection was recorded live across eight concerts at the Staatsoper unter den Linden, Berlin in June and July 2005.
Beethovens 32 piano sonatas have been at the heart of Daniel Barenboims musical life since childhood and through his remarkable career, Barenboim has gained a unique understanding of Beethoven s music. Having performed much of the composers solo, chamber, orchestral and operatic repertoire, Barenboims performances of these varied and complex works give a fascinating perspective into one of musics greatest geniuses from one of the most gifted and complete musicians of our time. Having first performed a complete cycle of Beethovens piano sonatas in Tel Aviv in 1960, Barenboim has repeated the feat many times around the world, most recently at the Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires, in 2002, at the Vienna Musikverein in 2004 (when he also conducted the Palestine Youth Orchestra in its inaugural concert and played a Beethoven sonatas concert in Ramallah), at the Berlin Staatsoper in 2005, and at both La Scala, Milan, and Londons Royal Festival Hall in 2008.
Barenboim says of the Beethoven piano sonatas: This music encompasses everything that a great human being is capable of in thought, in feeling, in intuition, in temperament, in character. All the different attributes of the human condition are contained in this music.

Saverio Mercadante was one of Italy’s ground-breaking composers in the development of opera, admired by contemporaries such as Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini and Verdi. But during the years 1814 to 1820, inspired by fellow conservatoire students and their virtuoso teachers, he embarked on a series of works for the flute. They include seven concertos, happy exceptions to the rule in opera-obsessed Italy of the day. The solo writing is vividly characterised, full of technical demands perfectly adapted to the instrument’s then more limited capabilities and permeated with a rich bel canto lyricism.

Soloist-conducted piano concertos can sometimes mean compromise, even chaos…but not in this case. Indeed, the playing of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields under Murray Perahia is even sprightlier than on a rival EMI recording of the same repertoire where Sir Neville Marriner conducts and Andrei Gavrilov plays the keyboard part. As soloist, Perahia is his usual stylish, discreet and pianistically refined self. He takes the D minor Concerto’s opening at a fair lick, a hot-foot sprinter embellishing the line with taste and affecting a little ritardando at 3'21 (just as the mood momentarily brightens) a la Edwin Fischer.

"Mozart Violin Sonatas," proclaims the main graphic of this release by pianist Cédric Tiberghien and violinist Alina Ibragimova. Then the track list title reads "Sonatas for keyboard and violin." In reality the program contains both types, for the two-CD set traverses much of Mozart's output for the two instruments, and his attitude toward the relationship between them changed over the course of his career.
