With his husky, soulful baritone, Michael McDonald became one of the most distinctive and popular vocalists to emerge from the laid-back California pop/rock scene of the late '70s. McDonald found the middle ground between blue-eyed soul and smooth soft rock, a sound that made him a star. He initially essayed his signature style with the Doobie Brothers, ushering in the group's most popular period with hits like "What a Fool Believes" and "Taking It to the Streets."

Groove On! was a compilation series released by DCC in 1996 featuring some of the best in soul, a few of the tracks may also be considered disco. It was remastered by Steve Hoffman and unfortunately has not been widely discussed like some of his other remasters. Only three CD's were a part of this series, and they are all here.

Moreover, he ensures that only the best available recordings are used so that the quality of the CD is excellent. For Grand 12-Inches, Vol. 14 special extended versions are selected from top artists such as Earth Wind & Fire, Donna Summer, Chic, Ashford and Simpson, Shalamar and Cher. But again there are also 12-inches that have never appeared on CD before, such as "Dis Go Dis Way, Disc Go Dat Way" by Mother's Finest and "Can I Be with You Tonight" by Steven & Sterling.

Each CD features several artists of the R&B genre, performing songs that helped to shape their generation. This is like having your very own 70s Soul Music party. "Rags To Rufus" is the gold-selling second studio album by funk band Rufus, released on the ABC Records label in 1974. It reached #4 on both the Pop and Black Albums charts. It is notable for the hit singles "Tell Me Something Good" (US Pop #3, US R&B #3), written by Stevie Wonder, and "You Got The Love" (US Pop #11, US R&B #1), written by lead vocalist Chaka Khan and Ray Parker, Jr.. In 1975 "Tell Me Something Good" earned the band its first Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
