And each year, the world-class Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (JLCO) records the compositions that are newly enshrined in the EE library so that high school musicians all over the globe can hear what these classic songs sound like in a cutting-edge context.

Fans of vintage electronic music might know the mature skills and music of the musicians involved in this recording. Well, they won’t be disappointed with this excellent bunch of sounds derived from vintage keys and sequencers. The CD nicely kicks off with "Pre-flight", composed by Dave Fulton and John Duval. Next is the strong "Arrival" from the trio Engels/vander Wel/Heij, which carries strong comparisons to the sequencer-stuff of ‘70 Tangerine Dream. Tracks 3 to 6 are the outcome of a session the SFP-guys had with Dave Fulton on December 7, 2002, of which "Passage" is a wonderful excursion with some great mellotron sounds. In all, the sparkling music on this album breathes the magic realm of TD’s "Ricochet" and "Encore".

The cinematic musical journey is about the fine line between taking advantage of your youth, seizing the day and burning out. The songs take an introspective look into his relationship with his decade plus career including growing up in Las Vegas, love, and fame. 'Viva Las Vengeance is a look back at who I was 17 years ago and who I am now with the fondness I didn't have before. I didn't realize I was making an album and there was something about the tape machine that kept me honest'. - Brendon Urie

It’s been said that basketball is like jazz—but Rock Chalk Suite takes the comparison to another level entirely. Written and recorded by the musicians of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, each of the suite’s high-flying 15 movements takes inspiration from a different University of Kansas hoops legend. As Marsalis says, both basketball and jazz “reward improvisation and split-second decision making against the pressure of time,” and the JLCO’s masterful composers have turned the Jayhawks’ rich basketball history into a stylish slam dunk of an album.

We tend to roll our eyes whenever we see Nils Frahm name-checked in a press release; but this time, the comparison rings true. Tatiana Alamartine is the real thing, and while Searching may be more “Ambre” than “Tristana”, her Bosendörfer pieces do share the timbre of Wintermusik. The artist plays a lot of notes with a lot of feeling; even the two-minute tracks hold more ideas than many tracks twice their length. While this is only her debut album, we already have high hopes for a grand career.

Tatiana Shebanova, who also features in the Fryderyk Chopin Institute’s on-going Real Chopin series (see review special, p83), gets her own complete, modern instrument (as opposed to Real Chopin’s historic instruments) cycle on the Polish label Dux. Arranged in opus order, it presents a satisfying survey of Chopin’s development, and it spares the listener from (for example) a lack of variety in the usual hour-long sequence of waltzes.
