After Carlo Farina and the Vitalis, Clematis continues its exploration of the Italian Baroque instrumental repertoire with Giovanni Legrenzi. The Sonatas taken from the collections he published in Venice between 1655 and 1673 feature highly diverse forms ranging from the trio sonata up to larger forms for 4, 5, or 6 parts and even double choir. His final collection of instrumental music, Balletti e Correnti, published in 1691, offers us a very different view of instrumental music in which certain French influences cannot be denied. Here, Clematis gives us the first complete anthology of his instrumental works.

A challenge to the virtuoso. While they belong to the German tradition, in these sonatas Bach invented a curious division of the parts in which the viola da gamba lies midway between the bass and the principle voice (the treble) of the harpsichord. This particularity in the writing and their exceptional ingenuity place these works among the great masterpieces in the viola da gamba repertoire, both fascinating and terrifying to performers…

Bach wrote these sonatas at Cothen between 1717 and 1723, probably to be played by the court virtuoso Carl Friedrich Abel or by Prince Leopold in person. While works for cello were invading Europe, Germany continued to give an important role to the viol throughout the eighteenth century, as can be seen in the works of such composers as Bach, Telemann, Abel, and Schaffrath (honoured by Guido Balestracci's most recent recording).

Una notte onirica is an enchanting musical journey, dedicated to the sacred and profane passions of 17th-century Italy. A soprano and six instrumentalists set up a nocturnal, intimate and sometimes disturbing atmosphere thanks to motets and sonatas by Cazzati, Turini, Marini, Rossi, Cesti and others. The torments of a jealous lover follow the luminous antiphons for the Virgin and sinfonie and lamenti compete in virtuosity. Una notte onirica is the illustration of an abundant and colourful Italian night, like a new carnival dedicated to Nyx, the goddess of the night.
