Since the mid-'80s, Barrence Whitfield has dedicated his life to reminding people that rock & roll and rhythm & blues are not separate but equal institutions, but healthy branches of the same tree; on-stage or in the studio, Whitfield howls vintage R&B tunes with the fury of a hot-wired rock band, and belts out vintage-style rock with a healthy portion of swagger and soul. In Whitfield's world, it's all loud and furious, and makes you want to dance, and really, who doesn't want some of that in their life? After a detour through other projects, Whitfield resurrected the Savages in 2011, and 2015's Under the Savage Sky, the group's third album since returning to duty, stands proudly alongside mid-'80s landmarks like Dig Yourself and Ow! Ow! Ow! as a master class in souped-up and full-bodied roadhouse rocking.

In the Plain by Denmark's Savage Rose has a striking cover photo with psychedelic color coordinated band members surrounded by wild pink lettering of the group name. Inside is innovative music, pretty much living up to the typical Polygram hype from this era written on the back cover. "Let's See Her" sounds like Ten Wheel Drive meets Vanilla Fudge; brothers Anders Koppel and Thomas Koppel wrote seven of the eight tracks, and created with this one clever sound and arrangements. The sleeper on In the Plain, though, is the one non-original, five minutes and 38 seconds of "Ride My Mountain," a composition by Jade. It's a wonderful production number where Anisette's vocal scream out over the very together instrumentation.

UK four CD box. This is a 74 track set featuring pretty much all the band recorded during their time with Virgin Records. Includes the hit singles "Babylon's Burning" (#7), "Something That I Said" (#29), "Staring At The Rude Boys" (#22) and "West One (Sine On Me)" (#43). Disc 1 has the #16 charting debut LP The Crack bolstered by six non LP bonus tracks. Disc 2 features the Top 30 Grin N Bear It odds n sods LP which now comes with two bonus tracks plus previously unreleased BBC Radio 1 Kid Jensen session that is something of a "Holy Grail" amongst Punk collectors. The third disc comes with three John Peel sessions plus a lively nine track BBC In Concert show from 1979. The fourth disc is a warts n all show from The Marquee in July 1979, never before officially released and capturing the band at their "in yer face" confrontational best. Packaged in a clam shell box with a 20 page booklet featuring detailed liner notes by Roland Link who has just published the bands biography Love In Vain.
