Art & Aviation is not only one of Jane Ira Bloom's finest albums, it is also a remarkably successful (and fairly early) attempt to bring electronic influences to bear on acoustic jazz. Bloom's writing is strongly infused with a straight-ahead jazz aesthetic. But she veers left on many cuts, altering her soprano sax sound with live electronics and also having drummer Jerry Granelli double on electro-acoustic percussion. While most tracks still sound very much like jazz, the electronics, while never becoming obtrusive, give everything an unpredictable edge. "Most Distant Galaxy" and the title track are Bloom's most radical departures, but there are electronics aplenty, even on her subtle reworking of Thelonius Monk's "Straight No Chaser"…

Erin Morley is one of today's most sought after coloratura sopranos, and her debut recital album presents a thoughtfully curated program which mirrors a stroll through a garden, delving into rich repertoire inspired by flowers, birds, and nature. Morley, known for her operatic roles, draws on connections to the natural world, offering a mix of well-known pieces, contemporary compositions, and hidden gems. A notable feature is the premiere recording of Ricky Ian Gordon's "Huit Chansons de Fleurs," a contemporary song cycle exploring themes of death, resurrection, fragrance, and the fleeting nature of beauty, adding a layer of poignancy to an album which features a diverse selection of vocal repertoire. So Luka Bloom is famed Irish singer/songwriter Christy Moore's younger brother, and yes, they both play a raucous acoustic guitar and sing of tormented souls and lost love; that doesn't mean that Bloom is overshadowed by his older sibling.
By any standards, RIVERSIDE is a mature and stunning debut. lthough on some tracks Bloom (his adopted first name was inspired by the Suzanne Vega song) uses some fine Irish and American accompanists (Eileen Ivers on fiddle, Jane Scarpantoni on cello), RIVERSIDE mostly features his guitar and deeply expressive voice. Sometimes a husky whisper ("Gone to Pablo"), sometimes a plaintive wail ("Delirious") Bloom's voice is as much an instrument as the percussive timekeeping on the side of his acoustic guitar. "You Couldn't Have Come at a Better Time" expresses exuberant delight at the return of an errant lover, and if "An Irishman in Chinatown" verges on stage Irish, it's still a rave-up worthy of the Chieftains, or perhaps even Christy Moore himself. An emotional gem of a debut.

Of the numerous settings of Walt Whitman’s poetry to music, Sessions's When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd is generally agreed to be one of the very finest and most sensitive. His mature style—a highly personal, instantly recognizable mix of severity and control with passion and serenity—projects the poetry now in simple chordal declamation, now in the long, high-arched melodies of which he is the master, conveying wonderfully the feel and variety of Whitman’s lines. Over the years, Sessions’s elegy has taken its place as one of the cornerstones of the American choral repertory.
