This was, in a way, soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom's debut, in that it was the first of her albums to be put out by a label she did not herself own – her first two records were self-produced. Even at such an early stage in her development one can hear the attention to craft that would always characterize her work, though her skills at this point were not what they would later become.

Echolyn is one of those bands that takes their many influences (Gentle Giant, Dixie Dregs, Yes, Genesis, and Allan Holdsworth to name a few) and rolls them into a sound all their own. Their influences notwithstanding, Echolyn’s trademark is their very sophisticated vocal harmonies, which range from melodious parallel parts to Gentle-Giant-style complexities. The instrumentation is usually rocking, but with a careful attention to arrangement and virtuoso playing. Songs frequently employ a wide dynamic range, with quiet acoustic and vocal parts giving way to high-energy electric arrangements.

Idle Bloom, of Nashville, creates an alternative rock that consists of a 90’s style that is grungy and also has a noisy, melodic, emotional quality to it. Their new full-length Little Deaths consists of some remnants of their former EP, Some Paranoia. Due to time constraints, they scrapped their original idea of a full-length, dropped the EP instead, and allowed their remaining tracks to age to perfection. Although the overall sound is grunge-based, one can hear influences of the indie and noise-rock scenes of the 90’s embedded within each track.

Bloom: Living World, out today on all digital music services. Brian Eno has reimagined Bloom as a studio work, applying treatments to an hour long recording and adding subtle sonic touches. It is accompanied by Bloom: Small World, which encapsulates the whole experience into a concise 5 minutes and thirty four seconds. Accompanying the music is an original video edit, also generated from the app. In Eno, the new film about his creative life, Brian explains that his approach to making each piece of music is to think of it as creating a new world. In Bloom: Living World this is illustrated with elegance and simplicity. Bloom is an award winning, generative, visual music app developed by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers @marblecalm in 2008.

Improvising vocalist, folk singer, storyteller, pianist: on her ECM debut Areni Agbabian focuses the range of her skills in music that casts a quiet spell. A sparse music in which voice, piano and the subtle percussion of Nicolas Stocker (last heard on ECM with Nik Bärtsch's Mobile ensemble), continually shade into silence. The California-born Agbabian, who came to international attention with the groups of Tigran Hamasyan, draws deeply upon her Armenian heritage, reinterpreting sacred hymns, a traditional tale, a folk melody transcribed by Komitas and more, and interspersing these elements among her own evocative compositions. Bloom was recorded in Lugano in October 2016 and produced by Manfred Eicher.

We've heard of quartets, quintets, sextets, etc, but "mu'tet"s? That's the multi-saxophonist's way of covering the many different ensemble switches and guest personnel appearing on this wildly wonderful, genre-defying effort, which was made possible by the hiatus of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, of which Jeff Coffin has been a member of since 1997. The energy of the up-tempo tracks - which range from the brassy New Orleans "second line" party tunes "Move Your Rug" and "Better Do Your Thing" to the hip-hop soul-jazz of "The Mad Hatter Rides Again" - is so intense that you never want it to come down.
