Excellent third studio disc by this bad-ass power trio rock'n'roll machine from Detroit featuring 13 tracks of killer, retro-70s, blues-based, heavy guitar riffage that brings the hard rock mojo. The Muggs were "Born Ugly" and they were definitely born to rock. Highly recommended to fans of Mountain, Led Zeppelin, Grand Funk, James Gang & Budgie. The Muggs is an American blues-rock band from Detroit, Michigan. Formed in February 2000 by guitarist Danny Methric, bassist Tony DeNardo and drummer Matt Rost. They were ranked in December 2008 on the "100 Hot Unsigned Band" list by Music Connection Magazine. They won several awards including the Best Blues Artist and the Best Rock Band for 2007.
Mieskuoromusiikki on ollut satavuotiaan isänmaamme kohtalonhetkissä vahvasti läsnä. Laulu-Miehet on usein ollut näiden historiallisten taitekohtien musiikin ensimmäinen esittäjä. Itsenäistymisemme kynnyksellä Jääkärien Marssi – runo salakuljetettiin värikkäiden vaiheiden saattelemana Saksasta säveltäjämestari Jean Sibeliukselle. Sibeliuksen käsissä runo sai nykyisin tuntemamme sävelasun. V.A. Koskenniemi puolestaan kirjoitti sanoituksen Jean Sibeliuksen Finlandia-hymniin. Molempien laulujen kantaesittäjä oli Laulu-Miehet.
Though John Barry achieved popular recognition for the swinging, loungey, noir-ish soundtracks he composed for the James Bond films, he moved to the front rank of film composers with his score for 1966's BORN FREE. Stylistically, the music of BORN FREE is miles removed from Barry's Bond soundtracks, though the composer's fondness for brass fanfares, stirring strings, and lush, intricate charts with stunning dynamic range is still intact. On the whole, however, the music to BORN FREE has a playful, innocent quality, evoking the nature of the wild animals at the film's center. As the movie is set in Africa, Barry employs a range of African percussion instruments, and sections of flute music (which often seem to echo the sounds of birds or other creatures). The arrangements are expansive and sweeping, giving rise to the sensation of open plains, and Barry's recurring musical themes parallel the film's action (the track titles indicate plot events). The score is, for the most part, surprisingly subdued, with occasional bursts of energy (mirroring tumultuous events onscreen) and its stirring title theme the exceptions. Barry won an Academy Award for the score in 1966.
The Smoking Popes kick out a melodic yet grungy guitar grind, but the thing that sets them apart from the standard four-piece alternative hard rock outfit is not only their pop sense, it's how the lead vocalist uncannily recalls the quavering, self-absorbed tone of Morrissey. Combined with their gift for hooks, it makes for a sound that is familiar, yet surprisingly distinctive. Bonus points for clocking in under a half hour.
A benefit album for abortion rights, Born to Choose features an almost standard cast of alternative musicians (including R.E.M., Natalie Merchant, Matthew Sweet, Bob Mould, and Soundgarden) supporting the most overtly political of all recent tribute collections. Born to Choose would be meaningless if the music was weak. Even though it is the standard mix of outtakes, B-sides, and live tracks, the music is worth the price, with R.E.M. & Natalie Merchant's "Photograph," Pavement's "Greenlander," and Sweet's "She Said, She Said" being the major highlights.
Sultry jazz chanteuse who started off in the 1950s with the Ray Charles Singers, continued performing into the '00s. After making her recording debut in 1959 for Roulette Records, with Born To Be Blue, the marked shift in popular music patterns resulted in a highly successful career in the studios. Phillips now became one of the most respected and in-demand studio performers in the music business in New York City. Throughout the 60s, she sang in backing groups on countless recording sessions, wrote, arranged and produced commercials. Artists with whom she worked during these years include the Sammy Davis Jnr. , the Four Tops, Leslie Gore, Linda Ronstadt, Mahalia Jackson, Wilson Pickett and Martha And The Vandellas.
