With the series approaching its 30th volume, you do kind of know what you're getting from a 'Cafe del Mar' comp - what's easy to forget is quite how delightful and varied a concoction such a known quantity can be. Now here comes Vol 28 to remind us, as it flits back and forth effortlessly between ultra-deep prog ('Love On A Real Train'), laidback piano house ('Nabi'), stripped-down lovers rock (Yvonne Archer's take on 'Ain't Nobody'), shufflin' broken beat/soul ('From Little Seeds We Grow'), hefty dub (see cuts from Feiertrag and Ghetto Priest), the Pink Floyd-isms of Common Saints' 'Starchild' and more besides. Deeply chilled - and deeply satisfying.

Amor rende sagace è il tipico caso di settecentesca strategia promozionale. L' operina della ditta Bertati/Cimarosa nacque per sfruttare lo storico successo ottenuto qualche mese prima dal Matrimonio segreto (fu bissata per intera la sera della prima), di cui riflette qualche soluzione espressiva ma non l' inimitabile impasto di comicità e patetismo. Di ciò è consapevole il poeta che così si scusa nella premessa al libretto: "dove gioca in principalità la buffoneria, non può aver gran luogo quello che interessa il cuore". In effetti, dal punto di vista strutturale e narrativo Amore rende sagace, titolo di felice sintesi comportamentale, scorre entro binari prevedibili e solerti: non frenato da smancerie sentimentali.

Sometime in the ‘70s, Sony (then CBS) released a two LP set called The Respighi Album which contained, among other pieces, The Church Windows and The Birds. Now The Birds had been recorded before and was pretty well known, but Church Windows was a stereo novelty, and it made a tremendous impression. Now this legendary performance has been remastered onto a budget-priced CD at a fraction of the cost of the original! It sounds better than ever–those magnificently deep organ pedals in the second movement (depicting the Archangel Michael with his flaming sword) will send your neighbors running for cover.
