The Thief of Bagdad is a 1924 Douglas Fairbanks swashbuckler adventure film which tells the story of a thief who falls in love with the daughter of the Caliph. In 1996, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The movie, strong on special effects of the period (flying carpet, etc.) and featuring massive Arabian-style sets, also proved a stepping stone for a scantily-clad Anna May Wong, who portrayed a Mongol slave.

Le Voleur de Bagdad marque l'apogée de la carrière de Douglas Fairbanks, héros par excellence des films de cape et d'épée. Visuellement, c'est aussi un des films les plus époustouflants jamais tourné, fruit du travail unique et absolu d'un décorateur de génie, William Cameron Menzies. La Bagdad mythique qu'il a édifiée sur un site de plus de trois hectares (le plus grand de l'histoire d'Hollywood) est un monde magique et chatoyant, aussi chimérique et obsédant qu'un rêve, avec ses planchers réfléchissants, ses minarets pointant vers le ciel, ses tapis volants, ses féroces dragons et ses chevaux ailés. Dans le rôle d'Ahmed, le voleur en quête de sa princesse, Fraibanks, torse nu ou vêtu d'habits de soie moulants, donne à son personnage habituel une sensualité nouvelle, et trouve une partenaire adéquate en la personne d'Anna May Wong (l'esclave mongole). Même si le talentueux Raoul Walsh en signe la réalisation, Le Voleur de Bagdad est l'oeuvre du seul Fairbanks : producteur, scénariste, acteur, cascadeur et homme de spectacle à l'ambition démesurée. (Notons que le prince persan est interprété par une femme, Mathilde Comont, non créditée au générique.)

Lily Powers (Barbara Stanwyck) works as a barmaid in her father's factory-town saloon where she learns to deal with the unwanted advances of male customers. When her father dies, she moves to New York City with her maid, Chico (Theresa Harris), to become a ruthless gold digger. First she meets office boy Jimmy McCoy (a young John Wayne in an uncharacteristically clean-cut role) who helps her get a job at the Gotham Trust Company. Recorded in 1961-62, they consist of the LP "Grant's First Stand" (Blue Note BST-84064), issued under the guitarist's name, and “Baby Face” Willette's albums "Face to Face" (Blue Note BST-84068) and "Stop and Listen" (Blue Note BST-84084). Other than their three LPs as leaders, Green and Willette only recorded together on Lou Donaldson's album Here ‘Tis, from which it has been added the title song, a long blues, as a bonus.

Releasing his debut album, Face To Face, in 1961, this son of a preacher rode in on the wave of aspiring jazz organists that proliferated in the wake of Jimmy Smith's breakthrough in the late 50s. Grant Green was happy to be a sideman on Roosevelt "Baby Face" Willette's maiden session and he was joined by drummer Ben Dixon. To give the studio date a different flavor from Grant's First Stand, saxophonist Fred Jackson, noted for his raspy tone, was added to expand the group to a quartet.

Organist Roosevelt "Baby Face" Willette is both a shadowy figure and something of a legend in the 1960s jazz scene. While he played with Blue Note heavyweights Grant Green and Lou Donaldson, he had drifted into obscurity by the '70s. But while on the scene, Willette made some fine music in the soul-jazz vein, and FACE TO FACE (1961) was his debut. Willette's Jimmy Smith-inspired organ pilots a combo of Fred Jackson's tenor and the aforementioned Green's ace guitar through some earnest, tasty, blues-tinged grooves. While it's no masterpiece, fans of soul-jazz should snap up FACE TO FACE while they can.
